Editorial from the June 2005 issue of Managing Automation
Tug-of-War
by Jeff Moad , MA Editorial Staff Abstract: Manufacturers are struggling with balancing soaring demand for tech resources with tight tech budgets. What should management do? The answer: Spend only on technologies that truly support the business. Relevant Links: Advertise with us After enduring several consecutive years of slow- or no-growth IT budgets, IT managers at manufacturing companies could perhaps be forgiven for believing that competition for limited IT resources is about as intense as it could get. But they're wrong. Pressure for a fresh, new wave of IT spending is growing, stimulated by a collection of forces ranging from regulatory compliance to globalization. Not that IT budgets are being increased nearly enough to allow IT managers to meet all of those looming demands. Most manufacturing organizations continue to keep a tight lid on IT spending, a habit many acquired following the Y2K-inspired tech spending splurge of the late 1990s that was followed, painfully, by a manufacturing recession. While observers such as AMR Research Inc. (Boston) say IT budgets in 2005 are increasing by an average of 7.4%, many manufacturers are keeping the pressure on CIOs to suppress any budget increases.

Monday, January 23, 2006 Tug of War My boyfriend and I are currently embroiled in a silent clash of wills, an intense battle on the position of the two vases in our bathroom window. I move the vases, he moves them back. This has been happening for the past two weeks, neither of us mentioning a word to each other.
We had just bought the vases from Pier One, on a fabulous after-Christmas sale. I almost creamed in my pants then, but I thought if I waited, I could do it in my boyfriend's face instead. I ran through the store grabbing everything that was marked down 40% or more.
I mean, decorating is what defines gay people. I once broke up with a guy because I couldn't stand his apartment. The guy was pounding me from behind. I should be enjoying myself but all I could think about was how bad the sponge-painting was, especially right where my face was pressed against the wall; the sponging was too far apart. If one were planning to skimp on paint, I suggest that one shouldn't attempt any of the faux finish techniques. The results are just too pathetic and cruel.
I am a slave to decorating. I so enslaved, the

The Lamest Tug-of-War Game Ever
Posted December 9, 2007 01:05 PM (EST) Read More: Bill O'Reilly Censors Censorship Conservative ... Breaking Media News
NBC finally caved and will air the commercial from the Conservative website, Freedomswatch.org I visited the Freedomswatch.org website. There's a bald eagle on the front page's banner, which flanks an American flag carved in the shape of the United States. As you probably guessed, the central color theme of the page is red, white, and blue. On the sidebar, there's a picture of primarily white individuals (it's nice to see Republicans have stopped pretending a lot of black people vote for them) beneath the exclamation: THANK YOU! And beneath: "Learn how you can Support the Troops by clicking here." I can honestly say there wasn't a single minute that I feared for my life or the sanctity of my most sacredly held liberal ideologies. Sure, conservatives run the site, but so what? There's wasn't vicious libel anywhere no one called Hillary Clinton a bitch or liar. The group wants deregulation and hates radical Islam. They want drugs off the streets and lower taxes. No one should be surprised by this agenda.

(Creek/Muscogee Tribe)
retold by
S. E. Schlosser Now Rabbit had a favorite place on the river where he always went to drink water. It was on a bend in the river, and two Snakes lived there, one on the upper side of the bend and one on the lower. Rabbit soon learned that neither of the Snakes knew that the other Snake lived there. Ho, ho, ho, thought Rabbit. I am going to have a bit of fun! Rabbit went to the Snake that lived on the upper bend of the river. "I am a very strong Rabbit," he told the Snake. "I bet I can pull you right out of the water." "I bet you can't!" said the Snake, who was very strong indeed. "I will go get a grape vine," said Rabbit. "You will pull one end and I will pull the other. "If I pull you out of the water, I win the contest. If you pull me into the water, then I win." The Snake on the upper bend agreed. Then Rabbit went to the Snake on the lower bend and made the same deal. He told both Snakes that he would be standing out of sight on top of the river bank and would give a whoop when he was in place and ready to start the contest. Both Snakes were pleased with the arrangement. They were sure they would win against such a feeble little Rabbit. Rabbit took a long grape vine and strung it across the wide bend in the river. He handed one end to the first Snake and the other end to the second Snake. Then he gave a loud whoop from the middle of the river bank and the two Snakes started tugging and pulling with all their might.

Major oil companies, facing declining output from mature fields, have been finding it difficult to increase oil and natural-gas production for some time. That task could become even trickier as countries such as Nigeria, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Russia aim to take more control over their own production.
According to news reports, Evo Morales, the president of Bolivia, told foreign oil companies on Monday they have six months to either renegotiate their contracts or leave the country. He reportedly informed the companies of this, as he ordered them to remit all natural gas and oil sales to a state-owned company. Spain's Repsol ( REP ) is a major player in Bolivia.

For the Upstairs, Downstairs episode, see Tug of War (Upstairs, Downstairs) Tug of war Tug of war tug o' war , or tug war , also known as rope pulling , is a sport that directly puts two teams against each other in a test of strength. Two teams of eight, whose total mass must not exceed a maximum weight determined for the class, align themselves at the end of a rope (approximately 10 centimetres in circumference). The rope is marked with a "center line" and two markings for meters either side of the center line. The teams start with the rope's center line directly above a line marked on the ground, and once the contest (the "pull") has commenced, attempt to pull the other team such that the marking on the rope closest to their opponent crosses the centre line, or the opponents commit a foul (such as a team member sitting or falling down). A contest may feature a moat in a neutral zone, usually of mud or softened ground, which eliminates players who cross the zone and/or fall in. There are tug of war clubs in many countries, and both men and women participate.

Tug-o-War
A team test of strength and cunning, Tug-o-War might be just the right party game for a bunch of rowdy children on the back lawn. But the key to a good game of tug of war is to make certain that the rope used is strong enough to handle the number and size of players. The main safety issue with Tug-o-War is that synthetic fibers can stretch and snap under excessive pressure in the same way a rubber band may. In technical parlance, this is called "synthetic line snap back". People have actually been killed playing tug-o-war from this phenomenon. But this should not keep you from organizing a fun game of Tug-o-War for your next children's party (if it is to be played out-doors). Yet making use of a rope made of natural fibers is highly recommended. To play Tug-o-War a field is laid out. Two parallel lines are painted about 20 feet apart on the grass or drawn in the dirt. The rope is laid perpendicular to these lines. A cloth flag is tied to the middle of the rope. Two teams of relatively equal weight are chosen. They are required to position themselves along the rope on either side of one of the lines leaving the center area (or no man's land) empty. The referee holds onto the rope at the point of the flag as the rope is gradually made taught. He makes certain the flag is positioned precisely mid-way between the two lines. On his own command, he releases the flag and shouts, "Go!". Both teams then pull on their end of the rope. The object is to pull the flag over the team's goal line.

The Coming Tug of War Over the Internet
By Christopher Stern Sunday, January 22, 2006; Page B01 Do you prefer to search for information online with Google or Yahoo? What about bargain shopping do you go to Amazon or eBay? Many of us make these kinds of decisions several times a day, based on who knows what maybe you don't like bidding, or maybe Google's clean white search page suits you better than Yahoo's colorful clutter. But the nation's largest telephone companies have a new business plan, and if it comes to pass you may one day discover that Yahoo suddenly responds much faster to your inquiries, overriding your affinity for Google. Or that Amazon's Web site seems sluggish compared with eBay's. (Optic Cable Fibers, By Dennis Brack Bloomberg News)
