There are two general types of ultramarathon events: those that cover a specified distance, and events that take place during specified time (with the winner covering the most distance in that time). The most common distances are 50 and 100 miles, or 50 and 100 kilometers. Other distances/times include double marathons, 24-hour races , and multiday races of 1000 miles or even longer. The format of these events and the courses covered are quite variable, ranging from single or multiple loops (some as short as a 400 meter track), to point-to-point road or trail races, to cross-country rogaines . Many ultramarathons, especially trail challenges , are characterized by severe course obstacles, such as inclement weather, elevation change, or rugged terrain. Many of these races are run on dirt roads or mountain paths , though some are run on paved roads as well. Usually, there are

AdventureCORPS, Inc., an event production firm specializing in ultra-endurance and extreme sports events, will host the 31st Anniversary Badwater Ultramarathon on July 14-16, 2008. Recognized globally as "the world's toughest foot race," this legendary event pits up to 90 of the world’s toughest athletes—runners, triathletes, adventure racers, and mountaineers—against one another and the elements. Covering 135 miles (217km) non-stop from Death Valley to Mt. Whitney, CA in temperatures up to 130F (55c), it is the most demanding and extreme running race offered anywhere on the planet. The start line is at Badwater, Death Valley, which marks the lowest elevation in North America at 280’ (85m) below sea level. The race finishes at Mt. Whitney Portal at 8360' (2533m). The Badwater course covers three mountain ranges for a total of 13,000’ (3962m) of cumulative vertical ascent and 4,700’ (1433m) of cumulative descent. Whitney Portal is the trailhead to the Mt. Whitney summit, the highest point in the contiguous United States. Competitors travel through places and landmarks including Mushroom Rock, Furnace Creek, Salt Creek, Devil’s Cornfield, Devil’s Golf Course, Stovepipe Wells, Keeler and Lone Pine. A true "challenge of the champions," the 2008 Badwater Ultramarathon features 46 Badwater veterans and 44 rookies: die hard “ultra-runners” of every speed and ability, and athletes who have the necessary running credentials, but are primarily known for their exploits as adventure racers, mountaineers, triathletes, or in other extreme pursuits. They represent twelve countries—Australia (3), Brazil (2), Canada (3), France (6), Germany (7), Guatemala (1), Hungary (1), Italy (1), New Zealand (1), Norway (1), UK (3), and US (61)—and nineteen America states. There are twenty-three women and sixty-seven men. The youngest runner is 27 while the oldest is 66, with an average age of 47.

    What is an Ultramarathon?
By: David Blaikie An ultramarathon is any organized footrace extending beyond the standard marathon running distance of 42 kilometers, 195 meters (26 miles, 385 yards). Ultra races typically begin at 50 kilometers and can extend to enormous distances. There is no limit. The longest certified ultramarathon in the world is The Ultimate Ultra, the annual Sri Chinmoy 1300-Miler (2092 kilometers) which is held each fall in New York. There is also the annual Trans America Footrace, which is run in 64 consecutive daily stages from Los Angeles to New York. Runners cover almost 3,000 miles (more than 4800 kilometers) at a rate of about 45 miles (72 kilometers) a day. Ultramarathons are run on roads, trails and tracks. They can be point-to-point, like the Comrades Marathon in South Africa; out and back, like the Niagara 100K in Canada; or held on loop courses, like the famous one-mile loop that Sri Chinmoy runners circle 1300 times in New York. Rules allow runners to "go as you please." This means they may take walking breaks, pause to drink or eat and even sleep if the events are especially long, such as multi-day races. No penalty results from any such interruption, except for the time or distance a runner loses from his or her performance. Men and women compete in ultramarathons at all levels. They always have. In modern times, they usually compete together in the same race. One hundred years ago, when the sport flourished as "pedestrianism," men and women competed in separate events.

    7. Hal Higdon: On The Run - Ultramarathon Training
While focusing on the Comrades Marathon, author Higdon provides a training plan useful for a wide range of ultras.
    http://www.halhigdon.com/ultramarathon/ultramarathon2000.htm
Hal Higdon: On The Run Ultramarathon Training 24 Weeks to a 54-Mile Race The Comrades Marathon is 54 miles between Durban and Pietermaritzburg in South Africa. With 14,000 competitors, it not only is the African continent's largest marathon, but it is the worlds most prestigious ultramarathon. The distance seems daunting, but most marathoners can train for and finish the Comrades Marathon. Or you can use the following schedules to train for other ultramarathons of similar distances, specifically 50-miler or 100-K races. The secret in running ultramarathons is to restructure your training, not merely add more miles. The following schedule peaks at 75 miles a week. The longest runs are four to five hours in length. Bill Fitzgerald, co-leader of the training class for The LaSalle Banks Chicago Marathon, ran and finished Comrades in 1996 with somewhat less mileage. He considers Comrades (and other ultramarathons) "doable" by most experienced marathoners. How talented do you need to be? The qualifying standard to enter the Comrades Marathon usually is 4:30 for a standard marathon. Although the Comrades organizers do not seem to enforce that standard as strictly as does the Boston Athletic Association for its race, they feel that you need the ability to run that fast to have a chance to better 11:00 in their race (the cutoff time for earning a bronze medal).

"Perhaps the genius of ultra running is its supreme lack of utility It makes no sense in a world of space ships and supercomputers to run vast distances on foot. There is no money in it and no fame, frequently not even the approval of peers. But as poets, apostles and philosophers have insisted from the dawn of time, there is more to life than logic and common sense. The ultra runners know this instinctively. And they know something else that is lost on the sedentary. They understand, perhaps better than anyone, that the doors to the spirit will swing open with physical effort. In running such long and taxing distances they answer a call from the deepest realms of their being a call that asks who they are."

On the second night the actual temps sunk to -22 degrees F in Int'l Falls, so probably 5 degrees less in remote low spots on the trail. However, during the first day of the course the temps had hit a balmy +35 degrees F and it was funny to hear racers complain it was too warm, sweating, and struggling to slog through the mushy snow. Wet shoes eventually solidified into ice boots when temps dropped at night. The second half of the course became faster and easier to navigate as the sub-zero temps hardened the trail surface. Contrary to previous years, there was no moon. So dark, the clear skies revealed what seemed to be many more large bright stars than usual. A few people heard wolves howling in the distance and noticed paw prints on the trail.

F.A.N.S. is run for a set time: 24 hours. We’ll see how much distance we can travel from 8:00 A.M. Saturday, June 7, until 8:00 A.M. Sunday the 8 th around Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (Click the left hand picture below.) F.A.N.S. is an ultra-marathon, which is any run longer than a marathon. That lower right thumbnail image is the Holy Grail of F.A.N.S. runners. Most races give a T-shirt to each entrant. F.A.N.S. does too. But runners covering over 100 miles in 24 hours get a sweatshirt emblazoned with that image (which was copied from my 1992 sweatshirt). As walking marathons become more popular, those seeking more are turning to even longer distances - ultramarathons. The standard Olympic racewalk long distance is 50K, which equals 31 miles and takes the top walkers 3:40. Imagine walking at a speed of 7-minute miles for that distance. Most ultramarathons don't expect quite as much speed. The Tahsis Great Walk held in June yearly on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada challenges walkers to maintain a 14-minute mile for 63.5 miles over logging roads crossing the island. Overview
The next Ultra Marathon is March 1-2, 2008. There is an equipment inspection Friday, February 29, 2008. Cost is $95 for a solo entry and $190 for a double. All WaterTribe events are dangerous events as defined by Florida law and common sense. You are responsible for your own safety. You must read and understand the warning before you register for this event. The Ultra Marathon is an unsupported, expedition style adventure race for kayaks, canoes, and small boats. The distance is roughly 68 statute miles depending on your course selection. There is a time limit of less than 2 days (see schedule). Your safety and well being are completely up to you. Unsupported means that there are no safety boats or support crews to help you during the race. You are not allowed to have a support crew follow you or meet you during the race. See the official WaterTribe rules for more details. Expedition style means that you must carry the same type of equipment and supplies that you would carry on a major expedition lasting 4 weeks or more. However, paddlers in the marathon can carry a much lighter load than paddlers in the full 8-day challenge. See the official required and suggested equipment list for some suggestions.
