Longest Running Ultramarathons This section is an attempt to list all ultramarathons world-wide that have been held 20 or more times (runnings). It is based on the best information available to ARRS but is undoubtably missing some ultramarathons and may not have credited all runnings to the ultramarathons listed. In some cases, it is difficult to trace an "ultramarathon" through changes in organizing groups, venues, and other glitches in the series. In such cases, an effort has been made to maintain some measure of constancy in the series. Race dates and male/female winners/times for each ultramarathon listed are sought. When a sufficiently informative set of winners has been collected, that ultramarathon is added to the website. You can view the dates/winners for each ultramarathon so profiled by clicking on the name of the ultramarathon in the following list. If the name of the ultramarathon is NOT underlined, then it has not been profiled yet. The last two columns are the number of dates and winners missing (profiled ultramarathons only). Ultra Marathon: Any race where the distance is longer than 26.2 miles is considered an Ultramarathon. Running a full marathon is a major accomplishment and Ultras take that 1 step or many steps further. The Western States is a 100 mile race. Imagine, essentially running close to 4 full marathons in 1 day. RunningPage.com is under new management and the new owner will be completely revamping the website with updated information, with ultra marathon content and all kinds of tools for runners. The overhaul of this website is extensive so please be patient with the updates. Running page is the Internet's oldest running website and was originally hosted on government servers before domain names were common. An Interview with Dean Karnazes, Ultramarathon Man [extended]
[I'm reposting this interview so everyone can see the dialog at the bottom - thanks for your questions! - SD]
Dean Karnazes saved my bacon once, and he had no idea at the time. In my first trail marathon ( Golden Gate Trail Marathon ), I started out strong and found myself with the front two guys at mile six. Worried that my newbie pacing would leave me crawling, I asked the runner next to me for advice on taking in calories, which he happily shared. Then he started telling me about how it differs when you run 100, 150, 200+ miles, or say, in the South Pole or across the deserts of Death Valley. Needless to say, I thanked him for his advice, slowed considerably, and faded back from this crazy man.

THE ULTIMATE ULTRAMARATHON TRAINING PLAN
You don't have to be crazy to run an ultramarathon. You just have to be ready.
By Doug Rennie
PUBLISHED 01/12/2005 Training for 50: A few things you should know You're not going to spend most of your waking hours running. That's because prepping for a 50-miler is much like marathon training, but with fewer and slower intervals, and somewhat longer (and slower) long runs spiced with walking breaks. Our plan offers enough miles in the proper dosages to prepare you for your first 50, while leaving you with enough time and energy to have, like, an actual life.
Ultra training is not about speed, or even distance, but rather time on your feet. Hence, the core element in getting you ready is the long run "sandwich": back-to-back long, slowish runs on successive days (likely Saturday and Sunday) bookended by two days of total rest.
When you start the 16-week schedule below, you must be at the point where you're running 15 to 18 miles for your weekly or every-other-week long run.

Ultra-Running A familiar face on the back trails is Micah True - a.k.a. "Caballo Blanco". Micah guides back-country trips on foot and runs the trails in his spare time. Presently he is organizing another cross-canyon run - an ultra-marathon. We have some details on the route since we cover the same trails too but on horseback - four feet being better than two for us! There are two races planned - the first was from Batopilas to Urique and started March 23, 2003. The second event was in reverse - Urique to Batopilas and started on November 21, 2003. The next race is planned for March 6, 2005. This is the 4th footrace across the canyons and mountains. You can register for future runs through Micah's website or write him directly . We can tell you this country is not for the timid so if you are in good shape - buena suerte (good luck)! Micah describes two separate runs below along with an account of how he became involved in running the canyons For another person's first-hand account of the race environment, read Huw Davies' article.

IT WAS HIS 30TH BIRTHDAY, and he'd started with beer and moved on to tequila shots at a bar near his home in San Francisco. Now, after midnight, an attractive young woman – not his wife – was hitting on him. This was not the life he'd imagined for himself. He was a corporate hack desperately running the rat race. The company had just bought him a new Lexus. He wanted to vomit. Karnazes resisted the urge and, instead, slipped out the bar's back door and walked the few blocks to his house. On the back porch, he found an old pair of sneakers. He stripped down to his T-shirt and underwear, laced up the shoes, and started running. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

What are Ultramarathon Races?
June 27, 2007
An ultramarathon is defined as any running event longer than the traditional marathon race distance of 42.2K, or 26.2 miles - which, interestingly enough is equivalent to running the length of a football field 461 times. One important element of ultramarathons is the aid station. Aid stations are placed at various mileage intervals along the race course and are designed to provide water, electrolyte aid and food for runners. At some of the longer races, aid stations also consist of doctors and caretakers there to provide medical assistance, foot repair and counseling for runners in distress. Aid stations volunteers can have a huge impact on the runner and especially in later stages of the race. The right food, the right words of encouragement and sometimes just a mere smile can be enough to keep the runner moving. Ultramarathons are typically run in two different types of formats, distance events and timed events.

A training guide for marathon runners who are ready to take the next step up to ultramarathons. It covers speedwork, weight training, long runs, stretching, mindset.
Training for the Ultramarathon
If you've been nurtured on 5K races, use 10K's for training runs, and have become comfortable with the yearly mileage build-up for the marathon season with your buddies, you are probably yearning for that next challenge. And it is..... the ultra! Before you jump right in, there is a bit of a training concept shift away from your usual routine. The objective of this article is to explain the art of training for the ultramarathon
The Ultramarathon Mindset
The ultra is a whole different animal. It is defined as anything longer than the standard marathon distance. Usually though, the shortest one to be found is a 50K. This being the case, unless you are an elite runner, this race is not about speed. Of course you want to do your best but it's all about reaching the finish line in one piece and having a good time.

Most UNH students wouldn't know it, but one of their fellow classmates is going to be doing something a bit off of the beaten path this Sunday. This particular student will be making a trip to Vermont to run not five, not 25, but 50 miles.
Yes, you've read correctly, 50 miles in an event known as the "Vermont 50 Ultra-Run."
John "Sherpa" Lacroix is a 25-year-old freshman here at UNH. Since 2004, Lacroix has spent a countless amount of time, effort, sweat, blood and tears in becoming something that only one-tenth of ninety-nine percent of the U.S population can claim to be: an Ultra-Marathon Runner. In other words, a runner who has competed in an event that is longer than traditional marathon of 26 miles.
