I'm really happy that Jeff asked me to run this race. Yep, that's how we work. Wednesday afternoon he asks me, and 10 minutes later, I'm signed up for another 50k. We're crazy when the two of us get together! It was a beautiful day. A little chilly in the morning, but overall really great. The course was a 20k loop with a 10k out and back and then the 20k loop again. Though the second time on the 20k did not seem like going a second time. The hills become steeper, the downhills more technical and the flats, fewer. But that's ultras for ya! In the beginning of the race, I ran with Ray (Jeff took off up the hill and I didn't feel like chasing him down at that point!) I had meet Ray back at Mt. Diablo 50k probably a 1 1/2 years ago. He was preparing to run the LA Marathon and thought he shouldn't run a 50k two weeks before (Hmmm...Napa Valley Marathon is in two weeks...) It was great to catch up with him and I'm hoping to get him running an ultra before you know it! If I can run them, anyone can run them! Just go slow and enjoy the scenery!

On December 10, at 12:01 a.m., 80 ultra-marathon runners line up at the Hellgate Creek Horse Trailhead in Rockbridge County for the third annual 100 km-long trail running race. It is 20 degrees and the start is filled with nervous energy. The 53 runners that will complete the race will spend at least the next half of a day running and running and running. With a line of headlamps lighting their way, Jay Finkle of Roanoke (right in photo) keeps his eyes on the icy trail. Sixteen hours and forty-four minutes later he will cross the finish line at Camp Bethel in Botetourt County. December in the Virginia Appalachians can bring a variety of surface and weather conditions. This year, many runners, including Jamison, are using sheet metal screws in the soles of their running shoes to add traction on the icy surface. Back in the day, when my pals and I were paddling whitewater 7 days a week, the occasional rescue from the throes of near death was a given. There nothing NO thing scarier than seeing your partner's bright red plastic hull wedged into an undercut with a foot of gurgling water over the top of it, and your partner still in it. The scenarios run the gamut: your buddy's stuck in the 'Hole that ate the Donner Party'; your buddy hits rock instead of froth coming off a 15 foot drop; your buddy's vertical pinned and literally becomes a fan-rock. Whatever the issue, it's time for fast action by the rest of the group. Paddle blades are churning as everyone in the pool below races back up to the highest eddy. Skirts pop, paddles are tossed, throwbags grabbed and kayaks given a last tug up onto the rocks before the boulder-hopping frenzy begins to get to your pinned friend. "Focus" isn't the right word to describe the state of mind. It's more primitive than that. It's as if you yourself are surviving and conscious thought vacates and makes way for speed, fearlessness, and success at all costs. Really, it's not unlike racing.
