It's a translation from German, with some resultant oddities, but on the whole I think it is comprehensive, and provides good learning progressions. The book covers learning steps, and some more advanced riding. It also has sections on specialty cycles (mainly giraffes), and a brief history section. I think that this is now one of the better books out on the subject, but could still be improved upon. Jasan Catan CATANZ47@snycorva.cortland.edu * "Die Kunst des Einradfahrens" (The Art of Unicycling) is a practical guide for beginners who want to learn unicycling, but it also describes some more advanced tricks and gives hints on how to use the Unicycle in a show. 100 pages, German language. Fellow MUni riders are encouraged to submit trail reports and directions here so that they can be added to the Favorite Trails page. Pictures can be posted to a photo gallery http://gallery.unicyclist.com/Greater-Los-Angeles-Trails If you are interested in finding others to ride with, go to http://groups.google.com/group/muni-riders-of-los-angeles Yes, that's right - a mountain unicycle. The words define it. It is basically a "souped up" unicycle and can be ridden anywhere. Three inch wide tire, sturdy cranks, pedals, and a hydraulic brake. You can ride it anywhere and it's twice the fun of a mountain bike! Precision and accuracy integrated with balance make you "one" with the machine. Why I ride... You can see the full slide show here People often ask me "How long have you been riding that". I generally answer in terms of minutes or hours reflecting how long I have been on that particular ride. Some people find this funny, but I honestly prefer the looks on the faces of the people who just barely seem to miss it. If you were one of those people, let me apologize now.... (shame on me!) I have actually been riding unicycles for a long time; longer than I care to admit. While away at college, my unicycle often served as my primary transportation. It was common for me to ride a small 16 inch wheel down to the local Wal-mart for supplies. Other people want to know what got me started. I was first introduced to unicycling by a bunch of clowns at a clown party (believe it or not.) I found I was able to master a twenty foot ride with just a couple tries and a wall to lean on. I told my mtoher I was going to get me one and learn how to ride it. Early the very next morning I was driving her to work and spotted a pawn shop with a unicycle in the window. I went back later that day and traded some old electronics I had for what became my first unicycle. I still have it, but it's become a bit of a Franken-cycle with the various repairs made to it over the years. I don't ride it any more and often wonder how I ever put up with that horrible seat... I used the long hallways of our dorms at Stephen F. Austin to master the skill. If you attended Stephen F. Austin and rememebr the guy on the unicycle, you may be able to actually guess how long I've been riding. For the rest of you, it will have to remain a mystery...

simple! by Joel Penson Unicycling Yes, well it may look different, but that is only because when you look at a unicyclist, you are actually projecting your schema, or paradyme, of a cyclist, which for at least 99.9999% of people just happens to be a two-wheeler, or bicyclist. Hence you wonder where the other wheel is, and for those who do not think before speaking, blurt out "wheres the other wheel"... GET OVER IT! I have not lost a wheel, instead I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of unicycling and all of the improvements in personal traits associated with spending hours and hours failing, only to find success! It took me a month of afternoons in mid 1998 to be able to ride a unicycle indefinately. I was inspired by a friend who could ride to the end of the street and back without a dismount, SIMPLY AMAZING! Since then I have managed to ride a 24" for 50km with no dismount, and also ridden in some wild places... Styles of unicycling I have tried include:
  • distance
  • mountain
  • skills
  • my unicycles Distance I mostly enjoy distance riding. I find that when I go out for a long ride, my mind doesn't have much of a chance to wander, as I need to keep focussed (particularly on the geared unicycle which has about an inch of play between the 2 chains).

Unicycling is, like juggling , a physical skill with hardly any practical application at all, apart from making people shout 'Look at that!'. Like juggling, it isn't easy (some would say if it was there wouldn't be any point doing it), but also like juggling anyone can do it. If you can ride a bicycle, you can ride a unicycle. All it takes is a few pointers, so that you know what you should be trying to do, and lots of practice. Unicycling has remained, until relatively recently, an obscure skill, limited to trick cyclists and circus performers. However, as society has become more affluent, the relative cost of the equipment has come down, and as people look for ever more obscure ways to enjoy and test themselves, unicycling has, like juggling, become a small industry. History There was a French device called a Pedocaetre , which had only one wheel and was made around 1853; but, this was for two riders sitting either side of a massive wheel, and was hand-driven. An Englishman named Hobby built a large, but more conventional looking, unicycle around 1870.

We have to commend Acidmods forumer Rocky for having enough technical knowhow to mod his handheld so extensively regular readers will recognize his work from our previous posts spotlighting his LED wizardry. We also have to commend him for blowing our minds with this off-the-wall design.
We assume that the inspiration behind the unicycling llama came from Rocky's animated avatar on the Acidmods message board. Fellow forumer XionDS engraved the llama onto a transparent shell for him with a CNC cutter, immortalizing the balancing pack animal. Congress of Jugglers - UMD
March 20th, 2008 I am getting lazy posting updates to this blog, but a few weeks ago on Saturday, March 1st, Joey from Fredericksburg gathered a bunch of unicyclists together to meet up at the 2008 Congress of Jugglers on campus at the University of Maryland. Although it is mostly a juggling event, we were able to play some unicycle hockey  and try out a bunch of cool unicycles. One of which was a custom made giraffe unicycle that was geared down and had a small roller blade/shopping cart wheel on the bottom. It felt really weird to ride and it was really fun to do pirouettes with! Joey and I also both brought our BC wheels and were riding those around the gym. My friend Stephanie wanted to try out some shorter cranks on the unicycle I let her borrow. Since we were swapping cranks out anyway, we decided to set up the unicycle kangaroo style , which is where both of the cranks are facing the same direction and are parallel to each other. I tried riding it, but it was to no avail. The Unicycle Lady from DC/Baltimore was able to ride it with a little help getting started and it was quite impressive.
