A low foot position allows you to work the calves. Straight legs for the gastroc, bent legs for the soleus. The higher foot position is more conventional, and allows you to work most of the bulky leg muscles. Use slow movement so you work the muscles when the weights are returning to the starting pointyou don. t just train while pushing your legs out straight. Keep knee flexion to 90 degrees or less, to avoid pressuring that joint. Do many reps with light weights (50-60 percent of your max for the exercise) for strength endurance. Do fewer reps with 80 percent max weight for pure (but potentially bulky) strength.

Weight Training Guidelines and Programs One of the most important things you can do for your body to maintain health is lift weights. Diet and aerobic (cardio) activity are equally important, but strength training provides many major benefits, including:
  • Increases metabolism. Muscle burns more calories than fat, so the more muscle you have, the more calories you'll burn all day long. Strengthens bones, especially important for women Increases muscle strength and muscle endurance Helps avoid injuries Increases confidence and self-esteem Improves coordination and balance
Getting started with strength training can be confusing - what exercises should you do? How many sets and reps? How much weight? The routine you choose will be based on your fitness goals as well as the equipment you have available and the time you have for workouts. WHAT IS THE RIGHT ROUTINE?
  • Warm-up (aerobic) - three to five minutes low intensity to break a sweat. (Examples: running, cycling, walking, etc.) Pre-exercise stretching - hold at a gentle stretch for a ten count; do one to two repetitions of each stretch, no bouncing. Stretch muscles that you'll be using during your workout. (Example: hamstrings, calves, quads and chest.)

Weight training can help you lose fat in many ways. One way, is by using free weights. Barbells and dumbbells help make you stronger, and strengthen bones. Another way weight training reduces fat is because it speeds up metabolism. This is because weight lifting burns fat while building muscle. The last way weight training is beneficial is if you do it the right way. The right program and technique will help you lose poundsmore efficiently. What’s more, lifting weights will not only make you stronger, it can strengthen your bones, and improve your posture. Speeding up your Metabolism Weightlifting burns fat as it builds muscle. According to exercise physiologist Elizabeth Quinn, studies show that “The average women who strength trains two or three times a week for two months will gain two pounds of muscle and will lose 3.5 pounds of fat.” Women do not have the hormones that build big muscle mass.

    1) I've heard that it's not necessary to do cardio with every workout, if this is true, when and how should I incorporate cardio with my strength training? 2) I usually do my lower body work outs before I run, but that just makes me too exhausted to run afterwards. If you want muscle tone and definition, do you absolutely have to do your weight training before you run? I've heard either way but I want to be sure.

    Hello; First, great that you both are engaging in regular workouts, including both cardio and weight training each week! Cardio training is best understood as raising your heart rate enough to sweat for at least 20 minutes (after your warm-up) and should be performed at least 3-4 times each week. As cardio training is the most important workouts for your health, this may be best considered as the primary concentration for exercise activities. With that in mind, incorporating cardio with strength training is ideal for optimal health and overall physical condition. For most of us, it is not necessary to do a concerted cardio workout every time, but it is best to add some type of cardio as a 10 minute or so warm-up before weights or prior to a group exercise class. This brings us to the second question.
