Calculating the Maximal Heart Rate, Resting Heart Rate and Heart Rate Reserve.
To calculate the maximal heart rate (MHR) for an individual, take the number 208.0 and subtract (0.7 * the age of the individual). Example: An individuals age is 25; 208.0 - (0.7 * 25) = 191 = MHR. To calculate the resting heart rate (RHR), the individual should remain in a resting position either sitting or lying down. Take the pulse for ten, 15, or thirty seconds and multiply by an appropriate number to obtain the figure for the timeframe of a minuite. Example: The same individual as above sits and rests with eyes closed for about ten minutes afterwards that individual takes a pulse for 15 seconds. This person then multiplys 4 to the count obtained. The result is the RHR. Assume for the following examples that the individuals RHR is 70. To calculate the heart rate reserve (HRR) Subtract the RHR from MHR. Example: The individual's HRR is 121.

No.
Edit: My usual response is that I balance out the shortness from weightlifting with a bit of basketball, after all basketball makes you tall, look at the NBA. Stonebreaker 11-14-2006, 08:32 AM like does it make you short or you're just your height cuz of genetics?
Oh, absolutely. I'm sure I never would have stopped growing at 6'4" if I hadn't tried weightlifting in high school. [/sarcasm]
Wikipedia/Weight Training/Children (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weight_training#Is_weight_training_safe_ for_children.3F)
The short of it is that you can screw yourself up if you're young, lifting too heavy, and don't have someone around to tell you if you're doing something wrong.
Then again, you can screw yourself up at any age by doing those things. :) DEVILsSON 11-14-2006, 11:39 PM

    Planning your training schedule: vindication!
Smart call! After rollerski intervals on Saturday, I drove to the gym to lift weights. I had both a quality rollerski session (except when the glue to my pole grip decided to fail during intervals and I had to roll back to pick up my pole shaft off the pavement...) and a quality weight session. Sunday was a different matter. I went road bike riding with Ryan Robinson. I felt pretty good and pushed fairly hard up the first real hill. But that was it: my legs had nothing left for any remaining hill. I struggled the rest of the ride unless I kept an easy pace. So what happened? My quality weight session included two season highs for squats and seated leg press. I do heavy squats using a Smith machine - the bar follows a track so you don't need to worry about balance. (I also do free squats, but at a lighter weight). After a warm-up set, I pushed two sets of 315 lbs - more than twice my body weight. Seated leg press machine? Three sets using every weight on the machine. So my legs were tired for Sunday's ride - even though initially they felt fine. Clearly, if I had chosen to do intervals the day after weights, the session would have been of low quality.

Weight training for young athletes
Strength and conditioning is a key element of technical training for adults and there has been much debate about whether weights or resistance training is appropriate for young people.
  • Strength training for pre-adolescent athletes should focus on skills and technique Children should work on strengthening all the big muscle groups, using free weight and body weight movements with relatively light loads Adolescents should initially perform one to three sets of 6-15 repetitions of a variety of exercises, beginning with a frequency of 2-3 days per week on non-consecutive days.
Dr. Avery Faigenbaum is a world leader in strength and conditioning training in juniors. He has written two books and over 100 articles on fitness and conditioning, which are highly recommended reading.
