Vegan Weightlifting: What Does the Science Say?
By Jack Norris, RD Many weightlifters think a vegan diet might be detrimental to their efforts because of the lower protein content of a typical vegan diet. Other weightlifters feel that a vegan diet enhances their training regimen by reducing fatigue and improving general health. Unfortunately, there are no studies looking directly at vegan weight- lifters, but there is a fair amount of research that can be used to extrapolate to vegans. While reading this article, keep in mind that weightlifting can be divided into two types:
  • Bodybuilding to achieve the most noticeable muscles. Powerlifting to produce the largest amounts of strength.
Energy
Carbohydrates, fat, protein, and alcohol all provide energy. Resistance training, exercises where muscles push or pull against some force, is used to develop and maintain muscular strength and requires an increase in energy above that of sedentary individuals. The amounts vary depending upon training regimen, as well as other factors, including exercise efficiency, gender, non-exercise habits, and genetics. Because of the variation in needs, there is no one easy formula for caloric requirements; it is a matter of experimentation. It is important to note that not eating enough calories to meet needs will tend to reduce muscle mass. Eating adequate calories spares muscle protein that would otherwise be used for energy. Paying attention to hunger signals can be a good guide in knowing whether you are eating enough energy. For a general ballpark figure, novice male weightlifters increased muscle mass and size, and lowered body fat, on a diet of about 18 calories/lb of body weight per day (3240 calories/day for a 180-lb person).

Column net.wars By Wendy M. Grossman Friday, 20 September 2002, 12:19 PM WITH ALL THE improvements there have been in information technology in the last couple of decades, wouldn't you think someone would have really come to grips with the Battery Problem by now? The problem is, every time someone comes up with a better battery - lighter, longer-lasting, more powerful - they bump up the power demands from the devices themselves. This is of interest to me at the moment because I'm on the road for two weeks, so naturally I am having a Battery Crisis. I'm travelling with two mobile phones, a laptop, a Palm, one of those megacapacity MP3 players, a pocket reading light, a tiny radio, and a miniature alarm clock, and except for the twin mobile phones (which are UK and US versions of the same model) and the radio and pocket light, none of these things takes the same type of battery. I have two batteries for the laptop, one a five-hour high-capacity effort, and the other a two-hour ordinary one. The Palm has its own rechargeable, though to be fair it's only temporarily mine; the one I actually use when I need a PDA takes ordinary AAAs. The radio and pocket light both also take an AAA each. The alarm clock takes one of those watch-style round, flat things. The MP3 player also has its own rechargeable pack, as they all seem to these days.

Raed Ahmed, who slipped out of the athletes' village Wednesday, appeared at news conference at an Atlanta hotel after meeting with Immigration and Naturalization Service officials. Ahmed said he applied for political asylum and was told a decision would be made within a few days. ''It's a political statement against the oppression of the Iraqi people,'' he said. Chemerkin, the gold medalist at the 1995 world championships, broke the world record in the clean-and-jerk on his final lift to win the gold medal with a total of 1,008 pounds. The total equaled the world record set by Kurlovich on Nov. 27, 1994, and the clean-and-jerk effort of 573 pounds broke the record of 562 pounds set by silver medalist Ronny Weller of Germany a few minutes earlier. Weller finished with a total of 1,003 pounds. Stefan Botev of Australia won the bronze medal with 992 pounds.

Columbus, Ohio - The 2008 USA Weightlifting National Championships, an Olympic Qualifier, was held in the midst of the Arnold Sports Festival this past weekend, exposing a whole new audience to some of the strongest, quickest, most explosive athletes in the world of sport.
Team Florida Gulfcoast, a not for profit sports and lifestyle education program serving the youth and young adults of the Florida Gulfcoast communities, was well represented. Pat Judge, a former football player at Cardinal Mooney High School in Sarasota, won his first national championship in BIG fashion, finishing the meet with the heaviest lifts of the weekend...he snatched 162 kg ( 356.4 lbs) and clean and jerked 205kg ( 451 lbs) to total 367 kg ( 807.4 lbs), personal bests in each category. He was a perfect six for six, making every lift. Read more...

NEW! Training Differently
This article is based on my experience over the course of the year with ‘training differently.’ As I’ve learned to train differently, I believe I’ve hit on an ideal way to train for virtually everyone.
Background:
Ever since I began weight training as a 13 year old, the objective was always to lift heavy weights. This has been true through every training incarnation that has spanned almost a half century. It was even true in more recent years when I have used much better form and longer duration repetitions.
It always made sense because I was quite good at using lots of resistance in most movements. I enjoyed training that way and rarely got hurt. I also was able to continue to use amounts of resistance in many exercises well into my 50’s that were about the same as resistance that I used in the same or similar exercises many years before. There was no reason to change something that worked so well.
The Impetus to Change - Reaching an Impasse:
A few years ago, things began to change. My joints became inflamed when I used a high level of resistance in certain movements. There seemed to be a threshold of force that my joints could no longer accommodate. I was smart enough to stay below that level of force.
