Resistance Exercise

Resistance exercise is a great way to round out your aerobic workout and help you stay strong. I'll discuss the ins and outs of resistance exercise in this article and then suggest two basic training plans to get you started.
What is resistance exercise?
Resistance exercise is any exercise where muscles contract against an external resistance with the objective of increasing strength, tone, mass, and/or muscular endurance. The resistance can come from dumbbells, weight machines, elastic tubing or bands , cinder blocks, cans of soup, your own body weight (for example, pushups), or any other object that forces your muscles to contract. Results occur when you train consistently over time.

Praise God, Campus Alive has grown by leaps and bounds not only in terms of its graduating alumni, but also in maturity and in service for the Kingdom of God. The testimonies of each generation of students coming in and going away every year speak volumes of the faithfulness of God in raising up a people of His own, a community of which Christ is proclaimed and lived out. I was preparing for a talk on church history last year that I began to understand the significance of the fish. Symbols and icons that pointed us to the past have its rich meaning that we often take for granted. Worse still, the rich history of the church from the days of Paul from Tarsus until today is often neglected due to the lack of exposure and interests, further discouraged by our continuous obsession for spiritual novelty. John Wesley, the great revivalist in England and the founder of the Methodist movement in the 18 th Century, once said that Christians know God through the scriptures, reason, experience and tradition (history). While we often excel in the first three, we should excel in our understanding of the latter as well, as it brings many insights for our Christian living and ministry today.

Robotic Weightlifter Tutorial
In this tutorial we will use a simulator that will help you to understand the trigonometric model behind the robotic weightlifter presented in Chapter 11.
Simulation
We will be using a weightlifting simulation throughout this tutorial. You can start it by clicking on the following button. If you can read this, you don't need glasses. But you do
need a Java-compatible browser.
The simulator displays an idealized robotic weightlifter:
  • The red lines represent the rigid body parts (the shin, thigh, and torso).
  • The blue angles are alpha, beta, and gamma from Figure 11.2 of the text.
  • The green angles are the knee and hip angles. (The ankle angle is always the same as alpha.)
  • The horizontal lines show the y-coordinates of the knee, hip, and shoulder.
  • The vertical lines show the x-coordinates of the hip, ankle/shoulder, and knee. (The x-coordinates of the ankle and shoulder are always zero.)
You can animate the weightlifting action by modifying the knee angle using the control at the top and then selecting Lift from the Robot menu. During the animation, you can watch the angle and coordinate values change.

What I'm about to write I would've found obnoxious and pretentious mere months ago but lately seem to tell everyone who so much as asks me how I'm doing: I have a personal trainer. Even now, it sounds like saying I have a chauffeur or money manager or lawyer; there's something haughty-sounding about the term that doesn't sit well with me. However, the gym I joined, Crossfit NYC (an affiliate of the national gym Crossfit ), couldn't be less haughty, and I've quickly become a devotee. The main reason I started going is because I wanted to lose weight, and though I'm a member of my local Y, I wasn't motivating myself to go as often as I'd like. I'd let any and every excuse worm its way into my consciousness, putting off exercise for last, until I had to admit that I simply wasn't going to do it that day, or week, or sometimes even month. By committing to pay someone several times a week, I was making a commitment that I knew I couldn't flake out on. And my trainer is not just "someone," but a friend
