A Plea For Televised Wiffle Ball
Clay Travis at CBS Sportsline's SpiN on Sports has a serious passion for Wiffle Ball. He suggests, nay, outright demands that Wiffle Ball be televised . It is an udderly ridiculous notion, and yet, I'd kind of like to see it happen. I'd watch a competitive Wiffle Ball game before I watched a lot of other things on TV. For example, dominoes, Knicks games, or anything involving Regis Philbin. As long as they still have the rule where you can get a baserunner out by throwing the ball and hitting him in the face, I'm all for it. Hell, I think they should just incorporate that rule into Major League Baseball. You'd have baserunners with welts and bruises, some astronomical batting averages, and guys throwing some absurd breaking pitches. If you've never thrown a wiffle ball, you can make those things break about four feet, though I don't think there's anything else in the world, short of shoving it in a woodchipper, that's worse for your arm. In fact, I think Mark Prior threw a lot of wiffle balls when he was a kid. ClayNation: We want Wiffle Ball on TV [SpiN on Sports] Read More:

  • Fastball - Hold the ball like a normal fastball (with your index/middle finger spread about 1-2 inches apart. Throw it normally with the ball rolling off your fingers. (This pitch would be used for location.) Changeup - Make your fingers into a "C" (how you would imitate a duck or other fowl). When you throw this pitch it will be off speed. Make sure to have your 4 fingers a little off to the side at the release. Ultimate Breaking Ball - Make a C with your thumb, and your middle/index fingers. Hold the ball so your fingers are on opposite sides of the ball. When throwing this pitch, throw it completely over the top and grip the ball very loosely. When you release the ball it's like you are almost not holding on to it. Exaggerate your follow through, (making sure you actually delivered the ball), and it should drop about 2-3 feet. Screwball - Make a "C" with your Index finger, Middle finger, and thumb. Have your ring and pinky fingers right beside them curled upon the holes. Then throw. If done right, the ball may move sideways up to 4 feet.
