... Yoga HISTORY OF WING CHUN
WHAT IS WING CHUN Bruce lee an inspiration
Practitioners of this direct, aggressive self-defense style waste no time in getting to the point- short, straight strikes right to the centerline of their body. Wing Chun kung fu, the only system believed to have been founded by a woman, is an aggressive style that is used strictly for self-defense. The legend relates that a girl named Yim Wing Chun desired to learn martial arts at the Shaolin temple. She caught the attention of a Shaolin nun named Ng Mui, who was an accomplished martial artist. So impressed was Ng Mui with Yim Wing Chun's ability and desire, that she offered to teach Shaolin martial arts to her. The Kung fu that Yim Wing Chun learned consisted of only three forms, instead of the ten or more taught in other Shaolin systems. Her Kung fu was also used only for self-defense and lacked the fancy sets that other styles used to entice potential martial artists into the kung fu systems. Yim Wing Chun's style consisted of short direct movements designed to eliminate any wasted energy and to encourage speed in the counterattacks. It also included training with wooden dummies and chi sao (sticky hand) techniques. There are several different types of wing chun within the system. The most popular and common style seen today is the 'slant body' form practiced by Bruce Lee and his famous sifu Yip Man, who was considered the grandmaster of modern wing chun. There also exists a type called 'side body' wing chun originated by sifu Fong Sun, and pao fa lein wing chun founded by Liu Ta0Sheng.

Wing Chun
The training time was too long for the Hons. They needed fighters now. So, five grandmasters of the Kung Fu style met at the temple to develop a new fighting system with a shorter training time. They took the best from all the Kung Fu styles and created a new system that trained combative soldiers in one third the original time. Unfortunately, before this system could be taught, the Shil Lim Temple was raided and four of the Grandmasters killed. Only grandmaster Ng Mui – a nun by profession – survived the raid. She taught this new Kung Fu system to a young orphan girl named Wing Chun (which means "hope for the future"). Wing Chun went on to teach this art to her husband. And as the years passed, the style took on its identity as Wing Chun. Only a select few were every taught this combative style. One of the few people to ever study this style was Yip Man. Born in 1898 in the town of Fatshan in Namhoi County (the Kwangtung Province of Southern China), Yip Man was accepted as a student at the early age of 9. Throughout the years he perfected the art of Wing Chun and today his teachings are the foundation of this Kung Fu system as we know it today.

Wing Chun is a southern style of Chinese kung-fu, the most influential Chinese martial art in modern times. Wing chun emphasizes self-defense reduced to its most streamlined rudiments: simultaneous attack and defense with multiple straight-line strikes at extremely close range. Every punch, poke, strike, slap, or kick in the system has been designed to serve as a defense; similarly every block, deflection, or evasion has been designed to double as an attack. Rapid hand techniques combined with low kicks tend to be featured in an aggressive array of constant forward pressure. Wing chun students are taught to insure the most effective deployment of their striking techniques by controlling, or "trapping," one or more of an opponent's limbs whenever possible. Trapping skills are developed through a competitive form of resistance training called chi sao, or "sticking hands," which besides strengthening the upper body tends to make a student combat-effective faster than students in most other fighting arts. Formal wing chun training also includes instruction in three shadow-boxing sets, a wooden dummy set, and two weapon sets. The first shadow-boxing set called sil lum tao, or "way of the small idea," contains the core of the art's techniques although the routine focuses primarily on breathing, balance, coordination as well as correct hand and arm positions. The second set, called chum kil, or "searching for the bridge," teaches defensive maneuvering skills and closing techniques. The last shadow-boxing set, called bil gee, or "thrusting fingers," develops fingers strikes.

Concepts Wing Chun sessions are taught in a relaxed environment as either group sessions or private tuition depending on your preference. The sessions are aimed at developing yourself through the use of techniques and concepts based on Wing Chun; they are varied and provide a practical and realistic approach to personal safety and fitness. About Wing Chun Legend has it that she was a proficient fighter at other martial arts but wished to streamline her knowledge. She witnessed a fight between a snake and a stork and was impressed by how the stork simultaneously used its wings and feet to defend and attack; she adapted this to the human frame and formulated her fighting system. She befriended a young girl Yim Wing Chun who became her first student and so passed the system on. Wing Chun is a system that is continually evolving and improving. Wing Chun teaches you in to accept what is happening around you, not to fight it, not to go to extremes (try to much, try to little) but to take what Buddhists call the middle path. Therefore if you are in a stressful scenario the mind will stay relaxed, you will see clearly, you react with situations as they happen (here and now), not pre-empting what might or what might not be, it just is...

Wing Chun is a very unique and scientific form of martial arts. Wing Chun's specialty is in close contact combat, using quick punches with a tight defense, coordinated through agile stances for a quick advance. The effectiveness of Wing Chun is achieved by well coordinated attacks with simultaneous defense and offense, yet delivering the correct amount of energy in a flexible and relaxed manner. Unique to Wing Chun is "Chi Sau", a form of training to help develop and put into practice your techniques and theories you learn during your training. Chi Sau teaches and help you to develop, responsive reflex, position, how to overcome your opponents strength, correct usage of energy and taking advantage of the shortest possible distance between you and your opponent. The principles: theories and techniques of Wing Chun are founded on the three hand forms and the wooden dummy techniques. Training begins with "Sil Lim Tau" (little idea), "Chum Kiu" (bridge seeking arm), "Biu Gee" (thrusting fingers). Then the serious students will learn "Muk Yan Jong " (wooden dummy), "Luk Dim Boon Gaun" (six & a half point pole) and finally "Bart Cham Dao" (eight cutting double knives).

Both mental and physical skills must be learned. The most important thing to understand when learning Wing Chun, is the principles. Without understanding the principles of the art, a practicioner will be limited to only applying examples that the teacher has shown. If one understands the principle behind a motion, a thousand examples can be made. You must also develope the mindset of a Wing Chun fighter.
Wing Chun is both external and internal. The external (yang) side of the art corresponds to the physical aspects, whereas the internal (yin ) side corresponds to the mental aspect.Wing Chun theory is subdivided into four categories of yin and yang. The yang consist of technique, power, timing, and angle structure. The yin consist of emptiness, stillness, sinking, and softness. >Both external and internal sides of the art are developed at the same time, unlike other internal arts such as Xinyi, bagua, and Taiji, where standing practice is the foundation. The yee gee kim yum ma stance in wing chun, is used as a primary meditation stance, while the first form is executed without moving the stance, the upper body is still in motion.

An evening of Wing Chun with Michael Cheung Tim McClean Adrian Tyndale Michael Cheung Daniel Cheung Carlos Pittol Mirella Genziani Wing Chun expert, Michael Cheung and father of Aikidoka Daniel demonstrated and taught a class on 1st December, 2004. He highlighted the similarities to Aikido. WING CHUN Wing Chun is logical, scientific, yet simple Chinese martial art system which was developed purely for practical and effective self-defence alongside fitness for people of all ages. It is a result oriented martial art known for its efficiency and economy of movement which was developed for survival, self-defence and damage limitation, rather than purely for attack. Wing Chun's simple and direct short range simultaneous attack and defence hand techniques, its use of only low kicks and its simple but evasive footwork, combined with its logical and scientific methodology, are the reason it is fast becoming one of the most popular Chinese martial arts around the world. It emphasises and utilises natural and efficient body mechanics, eliminating the necessity to use and rely on size and strength and is therefore suitable for anybody, regardless of age, gender or physique. Historically it is said to have been developed in Southern China by a Buddhist nun, Ng Mui, refined and later made famous in Hong Kong by a fifty year old slightly built gentleman, Yip Man, and then finally brought to the world's attention by a young Chinese Film star, Bruce Lee. Often referred to as 'Hong Kong street fighting', Wing Chun is often classed as a 'soft style' because of the minimal effort or physical force required to overcome larger, stronger opponents.

Wing Chun Kung Fu
Demonstration videos with Sifu Paul Smith; Wing Chun Kung Fu is fighting system characterised by short-range, explosive techniques. It uses simultaneous defense and attack principles, and favours efficiency of movement and sensitivity to the moves of the opponent over stength. It is a simple system, containing few forms compared to other martial arts styles, allowing the student to pick up the necessary techniques for self-defence in the minimum amount of time. Partner training is used extensively to build reflexes, speed of movement and to train in a realistic manner. More information on the Wing Chun can be found at the Wikipedia article on Wing Chun
Origins
Wing Chun is derived from the kung fu style of the Shaolin Temple. Legend has it that it was devised by the Abbess Ng Mui, who fled Shaolin when it was destroyed by the Qing forces. She observed a fight between a snake and a crane, and took the principles she observed and combined them with her own kung fu experience to create a new martial arts style. The style was later named "Wing Chun" after Ng Nui's first student Yim Wing Chun, a young girl, who challenged and defeated a local warlord who attempted to force her into marriage.

Unfortunately a large part of the Martial Arts world are of the belief that like their film heroes they to can perform super human tricks and absorb amazing amounts of punishment. In the training school 90% of what one trains in will work. This is because of the atmosphere created between students and the reluctance to ask the instructor the relevant questions, stops many from sitting back and actually placing themselves within a real situation where there are so many more things to consider than just the physical elements of the fight. To give you an example of how reality training can begin, we only have to look at many competition based training groups. Obviously for the safety of the fighters rules have to be enforced, such as no striking the groin, or no elbows to the head. However when we look at effectively defending yourself, striking the groin or using an elbow to the head might be your only chance of winning the encounter.
