The Bancroft area and surrounding district are favoured with old-fashioned winters and an abundance of snow. Snowmobiling Bancroft and North Hastings are fast becoming Central Ontario's preferred snowmobiling destination. Regular snowfalls and low temperatures, mostly between mid-January and late March make an ideal snowmobiling season. The OFSC trails lead to gas, meals , accommodation and entertainment along the snowmobile routes. Repair services, sales and parts are generally available for most machines. Skiing Silent Lake Provincial Park off Highway 28, just south of Paudash, offers over 40 kilometres of groomed and track-set cross-country ski trails through picturesque woodlands. Ski rentals and instruction are available at the Park. Algonquin Park and the Whitney area also has excellent groomed trails for the whole family to enjoy.

The school sought out the Marian Central boys basketball coach, a 1971 Notre Dame graduate, for its boys basketball coaching position. Notre Dame president Rev. John P. Smyth came after Les hard, and eventually the Dons got their man. Les, 52, is leaving Marian after five seasons without a losing record to take over at his alma mater. The decision became official Tuesday and Les told his Marian players at their open gym that night. "Based on five years I've had at Marian, I don't think there's any other high school job I'd leave Marian for," Les said. "It was a very difficult decision for me to make. I have a lot of loyalty and history with Notre Dame with my career, my brother Jim's career and my other brother Gary's career. My first reaction was it's too far. They were persistent in keeping lines of communication open. "It was a huge compliment that I was considered for the job. It was a tough decision because of the relationships I've developed at Marian with administration, the players and the players' parents."
