Significant Points
  • Work hours are often irregular and extensive travel may be required. Career-ending injuries are always a risk for athletes. Job opportunities will be best for part-time coaches, sports instructors, umpires, referees, and sports officials in high schools, sports clubs, and other settings. Competition to become a professional athlete will continue to be extremely intense; athletes who seek to compete professionally must have extraordinary talent, desire, and dedication to training.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top We are a Nation of sports fans and sports players. Some of those who participate in amateur sports dream of becoming paid professional athletes, coaches, or sports officials, but very few beat the long and daunting odds of making a full-time living from professional athletics. Those athletes who make it to the professional level find that careers are short and jobs are insecure. Even though the chances of employment as a professional athlete are slim, there are many opportunities for at least a part-time job as a coach, instructor, referee, or umpire in amateur athletics or in high school, college, or university sports.

About Athletes Against Autism
Athletes Against Autism (Triple A) is a group of athletes, personally touched by autism, who are harnessing their efforts into one voice in order to raise awareness and funds for autism research, treatment and education programs. This is an initiative of Cure Autism Now/Autism Speaks . Founding members are NHL hockey players Olaf Kolzig, Byron DaFoe and Scott Mellanby. As fathers of children with autism, they realized the importance of using their status and influence to make an impact on the over 1.5 million people in the United States alone affected by autism.

Enlarged Heart Rare in Top Athletes
Study Shows Few Cases of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy in Elite Athletes By Miranda Hitti
WebMD Medical News Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD
March 5, 2008 A certain type of enlarged heart may be rare in elite athletes, a new study shows. The study included 3,500 elite British athletes (average age: 20) who were screened from 1996 to 2006. Only three of the athletes had possible signs of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, in which heart muscle becomes dangerously thick. One of those athletes agreed to cut back on training, which improved his heart's size. The other two refused to trim their training, but other tests failed to confirm that they have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. "Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is considered to be the most common cause of exercise -related sudden death in young athletes," write the researchers. But they don't recommend echocardiograms, which are tests that check how well the heart pumps blood, for all elite athletes.

Ethiopian Athletics Legends Abebe Bikila Mammo Wolde Miruts Yifter Derartu Tulu ... Message Board for Ethiopian Athletes Ethiopian Athletes: In the second part of the 20-th century, many of Ethiopia’s proudest moments had come when one of her children won a major international athletics competition. The legendary Abebe Bikila gave humanity lasting images of triumph, humbleness and victory. Who will forget the site of this man running bare-foot in the cobbles of Rome-totally unexpected and unassuming-only to win the most prestigious of all running feats, the Marathon? How about the Mexico City Olympics of 1968 when injury sidelined Abebe? Sport writers and broadcasters had ruled about a victory by an Ethiopian when the light-hearted but brave Mamo Wolde run the race of his life to bring the Gold medal to his country. How about Derartu Tulu and her victory lap in Barcelona in 1992? Ethiopia’s green, yellow and red flew high and tall in beautiful Barcelona and a legend was born. The mind races to Atlanta in 1996. A hot and humid day and the women’s marathon. Who had expected the humble but strong-as-steel Ethiopian queen by the name of Fatuma Roba to lead the race almost unchallenged all the way to the finish line?

SPORTS NUTRITION GUIDELINES FOR THE VEGETARIAN
EATING TO EXERCISE AND COMPETE
Enette Larson, M.S., R.D.
FUELING UP BEFORE THE PRE-EVENT MEAL
Adequate fluid intake is the single most important recommendation for all types of exercise.
SUPPLEMENTING INTAKE DURING THE EVENT
Replacing both fluid and carbohydrate during exercise is important. What and how much to replace depends on the type, duration, and intensity of the exercise. Adequate fluid intake is the single most important recommendation for all types of exercise. The general recommendation is to drink 1/2 to 1 cup of water every 10 to 20 minutes. In a hot environment, when perspiration is especially heavy, drinking up to 2 cups of water every 15 minutes may be necessary to replace fluid losses. Adequate hydration enables the active body to regulate its temperature effectively and allows for good circulation and muscle function.
Carbohydrate replacement is necessary in events lasting longer than 90 minutes and may even be beneficial during high intensity exercise of shorter duration. This applies to both continuous events like cycling, running, and hiking, and sports with intermittent activity like soccer and weight training. Under these conditions, consuming carbohydrates during exercise increases both the time and the intensity the athlete is able to exercise before becoming exhausted. Researchers believe that carbohydrate feedings delay fatigue by providing additional fuel for the working muscle and preventing blood sugar from dropping.
