Should college athletes be paid?
Go all amateur, or give them pro benefits.
By Allen Sack from the March 7, 2008 edition E-mail Print Letter to the Editor Republish ... digg Page 1 of 2 New Haven, Conn. - As the NCAA's season-ending basketball tournament approaches, talk of the future of college sports is hot. One of the most controversial questions: Should the college athletes who are the main attraction at this multibillion dollar March Madness tournament be paid? As a longtime supporter of amateur sport, my answer is no. The amateur model embraced by the founding fathers of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 1905 remains the best fit for the academic mission of higher education. However, if the NCAA doesn't change the status quo – which is on a fast course toward building a sports entertainment empire – how could they not pay athletes or at least extend worker's rights? There would be good reasons for supporting the prohibition against paying college athletes if the NCAA's claim were true that big-time college athletes – like those who will electrify the crowds at this year's Final Four – are merely "amateurs" engaged in sport during their free time. That claim, though, has absolutely no support in recent history, aside from some Division III exceptions.

Just a few months ahead of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and the European Football Cup, top experts on asthma and allergic diseases from the United States and Europe, gathered in Barcelona, Spain to strategize about the dangers and control measures for athletes with asthma and allergies.
"However, athletes with allergies and asthma can become champions, if they are diagnosed early and follow their treatment. Being aware of these conditions, not only makes it easier to handle, but also lifts any possible disadvantage from such individuals," according to Professor Luis Delgado, chair of the meeting.
At the close of the Barcelona BASE summit, experts from both Academies began drafting a manuscript that defines the basic principles of proper diagnosis and treatment, and called for universal consensus among related organizations, stating that treatment can lead athletes to high achievements while safeguarding fair competition. It is anticipated that the recommendations will be completed before the Olympics, and will include information fro both elite and recreational athletes who have exercise-induced respiratory or allergy symptoms.

  • +39 diggs by MrBelding on The easy answer for everyone including myself is NO....However these amateur athletes are the backbone of multibillion dollar entertainment empires. The disconnect seems odd that this can occur. Paying them directly is not a good answer but what about allowing them to pursue entrepreneurial avenues that coaches and others alike are afforded? Seems to me that if big business is making money off of the top athletes they should be allowed some sort of commericial means/oulets, etc... Only a select few top athletes ever make it professionally, so what about the rest of the good athletes who business has capitalized on? Its certainly not a simple question, but perhaps one that should be entertained. At the very least businesses should be held responsible for the money they are making off these amateur athletes.

MSNBC As Congress prepares for a Feb. 13 public hearing focusing on steroid use by Major League Baseball pitcher Roger Clemens, a new survey describes how professional athletes influence young people who decide to use performance-enhancing drugs. The confidential survey found that a majority of the students in grades 8 through 12 who admitted to using anabolic steroids say they would use a pill or powder to reach their athletic goals, even if it would harm their health or shorten their life. Dr. Edward V. Craig, a sports medicine specialist and attending surgeon for the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, explained to msnbc.com the effects of anabolic steroids on young bodies and the difficulties of testing teens for performance-enhancing drugs.
