Introduction Olympic Games , international sports competition, held every four years at a different site, in which athletes from different nations compete against each other in a variety of sports. There are two types of Olympics, the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics. Through 1992 they were held in the same year, but beginning in 1994 they were rescheduled so that they are held in alternate even-numbered years. For example, the Winter Olympics were held in 1994 and the Summer Olympics in 1996. The Winter Olympics were next held in 1998, and the Summer Olympics next occurred in 2000. The modern Olympic Games began in Athens, Greece, in 1896, two years after French educator Pierre de Coubertin proposed that the Olympic Games of ancient Greece be revived to promote a more peaceful world. The program for the 1896 Games, including only summer events (the Winter Olympics were not established until 1924), included about 300 athletes from fewer than 15 countries competing in 43 events in nine different sports. By contrast, when the Summer Olympics returned to Athens in 2004, more than 10,000 athletes from 202 countries competed in 28 different sports.

I've followed parts of 'Combat Hospital' on CNN (Saturday afternoons - Central European Time) and I must say that I don't think that CNN should be airing such bloody scenes....
If they want to show the horrors of war, I suggest a different time to do so... some scenes are unacceptable on television! What do you think?

2006-11-18 06:16 am UTC link I would agree. Just because it's "news" doesn't mean they don't have some kind of responsibility for what they are broadcasting, and when they are doing it. The FCC wants to regulate everything else we see, they should look into this as well. Reply to this Username: Create an Account

Published in CAAWS Action Bulletin, Spring 1994 The Women's Olympic Games have long been forgotten, but during the 1920s and 1930s they were an important, international focal point for feminist efforts to improve women's sporting opportunities. The first "women's Olympic Games" was a one-day track meet in Paris in 1922. Eighteen athletes broke world records before 20,000 spectators. The second Games were held in Gothenberg, Sweden, four years later. Women from 10 nations, including distant Japan, took part. (Canada was not one of them). With a spectacular opening ceremony and marchpast, the patronage of the Swedish royal family, and several world records, the Games evoked comparisons with the IOC's Stockholm Olympics of 1912. Although Milliat kept her part of the bargain, the IAAF subsequently granted only five events. A majority of the FSFI went along, ensuring women's competition at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam where Ethel Catherwood, Bobbie Rosenfeld and the Canadian women's relay team excelled, but the powerful British Women's Athletics Association, whose athletes had dominated the Games in Gothenberg, refused to accept anything less than the 10-event minimum. They stayed away from Amsterdam, the only feminist boycott in Olympic history.
