LAKE WALES - From the outside, the trailer with the red door looks like just another portable classroom on the grounds of Polk Avenue Elementary School. But once you step inside, the resemblance to a dojo is undeniable. One wall is covered by a mirror, while the opposite is plastered with a large poster buffeted by pictures of karate masters. The poster lists the values of the Bushido Code Ð respect, rectitude, courage, benevolence, honesty, honor and loyalty. These are the values that Sensei Darrell Brewer is trying to instill in his students, in addition to teaching them self-defense through the martial art of ShoRei Kai. "Mostly, I've learned about respecting people, helping people and making calm motions," said 8-year-old Shev Patel, who has become absorbed in the art since beginning classes with Brewer at the beginning of the year. "It makes us powerful and gives us energy. It helps me help people that are hurt and be polite and respectful." The classes also hone the students' physical skills. Eleven of Brewer's students combined to win a total of 21 medals at the 2006 AAU Karate Florida East Coast District Championships in Sebastian on Feb. 18.
