Roman Architecture for Kids
Roman Architecture
Roman baths in Paris One of the things the Romans are most famous for is their architecture. The Romans brought a lot of new ideas to architecture , of which the three most important are the arch , the baked brick , and the use of cement and concrete.
Around 700 BC the Etruscans learned West Asian ideas about architecture, and they taught these ideas to the Romans. We don't have much Etruscan architecture left, but a lot of their underground tombs do survive, and some traces of their temples.
In the Republican period , the Romans built temples and basilicas , but also they made a lot of improvements to their city: aqueducts and roads and sewers . The Forum began to take shape. Outside of Rome, people began to build stone amphitheaters for gladiatorial games
The first Roman emperor, Augustus , made more changes: he built a lot of brick and marble buildings , including a big Altar of Peace and a big tomb for his family, and a big stone theater for plays. Augustus' stepson Tiberius rebuilt the Temple of Castor and Pollux in the Roman forum.

Richard Roberts - Hearing A Reality
Exploded Axonometric of his most recent electro-acoustic system
Architect Richard Roberts electro-acoustic systems have been developed to explore the sonic properties of environments, and reveal the way in which sound and space co-habit one another. The system uses speakers and panels of resonating metal and gains its input and mode of operation through the cyclical feedback of sound waves from the environment in which it is placed. It is extremely reactive and capable of changing in real-time to anything that alters the acoustic properties of the environment that it exists within.

Don't Let Architecture Astronauts Scare You
By Joel Spolsky
Saturday, April 21, 2001
When great thinkers think about problems, they start to see patterns. They look at the problem of people sending each other word-processor files, and then they look at the problem of people sending each other spreadsheets, and they realize that there's a general pattern: sending files. That's one level of abstraction already. Then they go up one more level: people send files, but web browsers also " send " requests for web pages. And when you think about it, calling a method on an object is like sending a message to an object! It's the same thing again! Those are all sending operations, so our clever thinker invents a new, higher, broader abstraction called messaging , but now it's getting really vague and nobody really knows what they're talking about any more. Blah.

Web Services and Service-Oriented Architectures
This site will help you get started with Web Services and service-oriented architectures. It features free articles, services, and product listings that can be used to develop a service-oriented architecture using Web Services. Online articles that provide an extensive overview of Web Services, related standards, and technologies that can be used in service-oriented architectures. There are nearly 400 pages of articles. Services to help your organization decide how to use Web Services in a service-oriented architecture. Product listings to connect you to the vendor sites for each of the technologies.
Example enterprise Web Services architecture
The following diagram is an example of a service-oriented architecture using Web Services. Click on the yellow boxes below to obtain more information on a subject.
Getting started
It is difficult to keep up with the rapid changes in technology. The advent of Web Services and service-oriented architectures makes "keeping up" all the more important, because these technologies are fundamentally changing the way we build our internal systems—those that support our organizations—and how internal and external systems will interact. We are on the cusp of building "plug-compatible" software components that will reduce the costs of our software systems at the same time increasing the capabilities of the systems. Sure, you have heard that promise more than once before. And more than once, the delivery fell short of the promise. But, as with such promises, they will come true some day. That time is now.
