    Biomedical Engineering Department
Richard T. Hart, PhD, Chair Biomedical engineering (BME) combines engineering principles and methodology with physical, chemical and mathematical sciences to solve problems in biology, medicine, behavior and health. Biomedical engineers are employed by pharmaceutical industries, government agencies, biomedical product companies, universities, medical center labs and emerging high-tech industries. Due to their multidisciplinary backgrounds, biomedical engineers have diverse research interests, often acting as liaisons between technological and clinical communities.
    About the Department
Biomedical Engineering at The Ohio State University has a long and distinguished history. First started as a Center in 1971 with a focus upon interdisciplinary research and graduate education, the new Department of Biomedical Engineering has begun strategic planning for a new era. We have plans for an undergraduate program (to begin as early as 2008) and will be hiring additional faculty and staff. We have close ties to other departments in engineering, and to the College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, the College of Biological Sciences, the College of Medicine, the College of Dentistry, and the College of Veterinary Medicine. The potential for integrating engineering and life sciences for the advancement of human health is unlimited, and it's an exciting time for Biomedical Engineering at Ohio State.

This book is here to provide a practical overview on the interdisciplinary field of Biomedical Engineering. The main target audience are biomedical engineering students, who are usually overwhelmed when first entering this field. This book should provide a practical roadmap to guide biomedical engineering students through their learning process. The book should achieve this goal by giving them a brief, yet efficient, overview on different disciplines within the biomedical engineering field. In this way, it should help them to choose their discipline of interest and get familiar with the necessary tools they need to develop their career in the chosen discipline. This book is not intended to be a Biomedical Engineering Handbook. There should be no much detail on the tools; rather, there should be appropriate links pointing to the tools necessary. This book should

It is a field that combines the expertise of engineering with medical needs for the progress of healthcare . It is more concerned with biological, safety and regulatory issues than other forms of engineering . It may be defined as "The application of engineering principles and techniques to the medical field". Biomedical engineers usually require graduate degrees and sound knowledge of electronics engineering and human anatomy and physiology. The jobs are genrally high-paying, ranging from $50,000 to $100,000 in annual pay. Though the number of biomedical engineering are currently low (under 10,000), the number is expected to rise as modern medicine greatly improves. More and more universities are now improving their undergraduate biomedical engineering courses as interest in the field accelerates. With the prior discovery of the X-ray , it was not until the late when researchers began to understand the effects of X-rays on
