Biomedical Engineering As a biomedical engineering major you can concentrate in:
  • Biomechanics Biomaterials/tissue engineering Physiological measurement Pre-professional health Students have the opportunity to learn by participating in faculty research. Biomedical engineering graduates have high success rates for gaining admission to medical schools and top graduate schools. Undergraduate students have opportunities to work with faculty on research during the summer. The biomedical engineering department is developing programs with our local hospital for student shadowing of health care professionals. Due to its smaller size, the biomedical engineering department allows close interaction between faculty and students. There are opportunities to work on medical devices for the developing world.

Academic Degree and Certification Programs
The School supports academic programs in three areas: biomedical engineering biomedical science , and health systems . While these areas are different in their applications and clientele, there are certain common themes which run through all three programs. These themes are based upon our best estimates about future developments in science, engineering, and health care. While it is always somewhat risky to predict the future, certain trends appear to be inevitable:
  • While the 20th century was the Age of Electronics and Computers, the 21st will be the Age of Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology. The integration of engineered and living systems will become a critical part of human performance, well-being, and health care in the next century;
  • The management and flow of information will become even more critical in the 21st century than it is today;
  • The pace of change in social systems, business, research, and education will continue to be rapid. This favors individuals able to think quickly and independently and who can adapt swiftly to new situations and opportunities. Thus, the individual with multidisciplinary training will have the edge over the long term.

Biomedical Engineering Career Options and Job Opportunities
Biomedical Engineering (BME) encompasses a wide spectrum of activities where knowledge and tools used in traditional engineering disciplines are applied to the development of devices and systems for clinical diagnosis and therapy- and to the investigation of the physiological and biological basis of human diseases. With the rise in life expectancy and the importance of the quality of life in the developed countries, there is an increasing demand for high-level health-related products and services. To meet these needs, the biomedical industry has been developing at an accelerated pace and is currently one of the leading sectors of the high-tech industries.
Past experience shows that our graduates, from the relatively new BSc program, as well as the well-established MSc and PhD programs, have been very successful in finding employment in the Israeli biomedical industry. Their ability to integrate knowledge from several fields has been found appealing by many businesses and employers. They can be found in key positions in leading companies. The unique combination of engineering with a solid background in the medical sciences is very attractive to many companies, particularly start-ups, research institutions, health organizations and hospitals.
Study Program and Specialization
The Technion BME Undergraduate Program is a four-year study program leading to the degree of a "Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering" (BSc).

70. New Biomedical Engineering Degrees Approved

USC THIS SITE CHE approves new undergraduate and graduate biomedical engineering degree programs at USC USC will begin offering bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in biomedical engineering this fall, following March 2 approval from the S.C. Commission on Higher Education. USC's degree programs were developed in collaboration with Clemson University and are complementary to Clemson's degree programs in bioengineering. The chemical engineering and mechanical engineering departments will jointly administer the USC biomedical engineering degree programs, which will also have teaching and research support from USC's School of Medicine, College of Arts and Sciences and the Arnold School of Public Health. "We're the only university in the state with a medical school to complement our engineering and computing college, and we expect the collaboration between the two will provide a solid foundation for these new degree programs," said Michael Amiridis, chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering. "We anticipate as many as 50 students this fall. Gauging the interest we've had so far, that number could grow much higher in the future." USC already has recruited faculty members with expertise in biomedical engineering in anticipation of the degree programs' approval. The University is using its share of a $9 million National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to the state to help cover salary and laboratory start-up costs for the new faculty members.

What Can I Do with a Major in ... Biomedical Engineering?
Biomedical Engineering Description of Major This major educates students about how to improve healthcare using the tools and principles learned from engineering. The biomedical engineering program has two tracks: biomechanics and medical device innovation. Biomechanics emphasizes the study of forces, motions, shape changes (deformations) and failure of biological tissues and organ systems. Medical device innovation emphasizes the design and development of new medical products and surgical instruments.
