Jump to: navigation search This page is writted by a non english speaker; please excuse the bad grammar (And correct it!). Applications in Civil Engineering are countless. Some books for civil engineers directly exclude chapters with important topics like flow of water with fast variation on space and/or time. By example, "Open Channel Hydraulics" (V. T. Chow) has a chapter that only says something like "not much to say about...". There are only two practical ways to know how work the water on this cases:
      • Making a physical scale model.
        • This can be done only with structures expensive enough to admit making a scale model. But the main volume of structures are cheap, or so small that a scale model need to take in account the surface stress, and the scale model need to ignore some characteristics of flux. Because of this, handbooks usually offer standard structures that have to be strictly copied, with poor degrees of freedom for designers. Alternatively, calculations use large security coefficients for overcoming uncertainities.

A PROLOG TUTORIAL
By Prof. Chris Nikolopoulos 3.1 PROLOG BASICS Kowalski, (in "Algorithms=Logic+Control",[9]), proposed that the problem specification can be separated from control and declarative logic statements can be interpreted as procedural computer instructions. Prolog, (Programming in Logic), a declarative logic programming language which implements these ideas, was developed by Colmerauer and his colleagues of the Artificial Intelligence Group at Marseilles, [5,6]. Unlike the traditional procedural languages, Prolog is a declarative programming language. The Prolog programmer expresses in logic syntax the logical specifications about the problem to be solved, ("declares" the available knowledge about the problem domain) and does not need to specify "how" a solution is to be derived. The built in inference mechanism is based on Robinson's resolution principle and contains the necessary control and algorithmic knowledge on how to execute the specifications and retrieve the answers to queries automatically. The search strategy employed is based on Kowalski's linear resolution strategy and set of support. Negation is handled by employing the closed world assumption. Although Prolog may not be the best choice for certain application domains, for example systems programming, it is ideal for knowledge representation and reasoning tasks. Its knowledge representational ability and automated deductive power render Prolog suitable for solving problems in such varied domains as expert systems, database systems, natural language processing and computer aided design, (Subrahmanyan, [14]). It will be used in subsequent chapters to demonstrate various expert system concepts.

Civil engineers not only develop the buildings and infrastructure in which we live, work, and travel, but they also work to maintain and improve them as they grow older. The work of civil engineers, therefore, involves societal issues such as energy conservation and the safety of the structures themselves, to the development of new technologies to facilitate the progress of the field into the future. Coursework includes engineering theory, design, technical classes on the nature of certain materials such as concrete and steel, and feasibility analysis, among others.

Civil Engineering,
Civil Engineering, the oldest kind of non-military engineering it was so named to differentiate it from the military variety was first taught at Princeton in 1875 by Charles McMillan , the first engineering professor in the newly established John C. Green School of Science, and the founder of the department that the Princeton Engineer many years later called ``the granddad of the School of Engineering.'' Charles McMillan retired in 1914 and was succeeded as chairman by Frank H. Constant, who served until 1937. The year of McMillan's retirement also marked the arrival of George E. Beggs who became internationally known for his pioneering work in the model analysis of bridges and other structures. Beggs was the mainstay of the departmental program in structural engineering, which was further strengthened in the late thirties and early forties by the addition of Gregory P. Tschebotarioff in soil mechanics and Hans F. Winterkorn in soil physics. Beggs followed Constant as chairman, serving for two years until his death in 1939. He was succeeded by Philip Kissam (1939 to 1946) and Elmer K. Timby, who resigned in 1949 to enter private practice. Like his old teacher Professor Harris, Kissam initiated hundreds of undergraduates into the techniques of surveying during his forty-four years in the department. The chairman from 1950 to 1961 was W. Mack Angas, who, as a vice-admiral in the United States Navy, had supervised the construction of sixteen bases by the ``seabees'' in the Southwest Pacific during World War II, and who, at Princeton, founded the department's River and Harbor Program, which flourished during the fifties and sixties.

Dandy University of Adelaide Imagine designing such exciting projects as a bridge over the Bosphorous or Danube, the structural support system for a 300 metre high building in Kuala Lumpur or an advanced wastewater treatment system in Manila. These are all works carried out by Civil Engineers. Civil Engineering is that branch of engineering responsible for the design, construction, operation maintenance of facilities such as roads, bridges, dams, water supply schemes, sewerage systems , airports, railways, factories and large buildings. Although the profession of Civil Engineering dates back to the eighteenth century, recent developments such as the use of computers in design and operations mean that the profession will continue to provide exciting and challenging careers for men and women into the twenty-first century. Civil engineers tend to specialise in areas such as structural engineering, water engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation or construction. Structural engineering deals with the analysis and design of buildings, bridges, towers, dams, and the like. In the design of large buildings, the structural engineer usually works in conjunction with an architect. In some countries, the contributions of architect and engineer are combined and provided by an architectural engineer.

What is Civil Engineering?
Civil Engineering concerns itself with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical infrastructure of a modern society and its environment . Civil engineers plan roads, bridges, and transportation networks for moving people and goods. They are also responsible for the design of foundations and superstructures of common structures such as buildings, bridges dams tunnels wharves , as well as of unusual structures such as rocket installations, containment buildings for nuclear reactors, supports for radio telescopes , and frameworks for aircraft . In addition, they are concerned with the engineering aspects of water resources transportation facilities ; planning metropolitan areas , and conducting and managing their public facilities. In dealing with environmental problems , civil engineers perform vital functions such as monitoring and controlling air, water , and soil quality , assessing the impact of technological changes on the environment, and developing innovative

United Kingdom Education Home Education Institutions Student Services Recruit Students ... www.studentrecruitmentmedia.com Study Civil Engineering United Kingdom Civil engineering is an exciting profession; it always has been, it is now and will be in the new millennium. It is a profession of great breadth involving many activities that maintain our environment and meet the ever changing needs of our society. Civil engineering is all about creating, improving and protecting the environment in which we live. It provides facilities for day-to-day life, for transport and for industry to go about its work. The civil engineering profession is innovative, creative, and takes its members to all parts of the world. It is not just a job for men - women are very successful as well and occupy senior positions within the profession. Civil engineers produce many things taken for granted within society. Every morning we might switch on a light, boil a kettle, use the bathroom, walk along a road, cross a bridge or take a train. Without civil engineering we would not be able to do any of this. We can all think of examples of well-known engineering projects in United Kingdom and abroad; the Channel Tunnel, the Black Country Spine Road, the Cardiff Bay Development and Coastal Protection Schemes, the reclamation of open cast mines and waste tips, the Millennium Dome, the new Airport in Hong Kong, to name but a few!

http://www.waltersforensic.com/articles/civil_engineering/vol5-no3.htm
WATER PROBLEMS A common problem with unwanted water in homes occurs in the basement. This is not hard to understand, given that the typical Canadian basement is at least 4 feet below the level of the ground surface outside. However, properly designed and constructed foundation drainage systems, foundation wall damp or water proofing, surface water drainage, and rainwater drainage systems all combine to protect the homeowner from dreaded "water in the basement". A breakdown in the effectiveness of any one of the aforementioned systems can produce immediate, and often damaging results. Such a breakdown can occur in a multitude of ways, including:
  • changes in the topography, even hundreds of feet away (remember that pool the neighbour 3 houses over recently put in?) settlement of the ground close to the house and/or improper grading / landscaping of grounds causing surfacewater to drain towards the house high groundwater table failure of mechanical sump pumping systems, if present cracking of the foundation walls and the waterproofing or dampproofing layer poor construction (improperly placed drainage tile, little or no granular backfill, improper or non-existent dampproofing or waterproofing, etc.) which may not be evident until months or even years after completion

Civil and Environmental Engineering
201 More Civil and environmental engineering is a profession which interfaces closely with society in the planning, design, construction, and management of facilities serving the needs of people. These activities include all transportation modes: highways, aerospace, rivers, and harbors; water resources, hydraulics, and coastal engineering; structures, mechanics, and geotechnical engineering; surveying, mapping, and photogrammetry; urban planning and development; water supply, wastewater treatment, and water-quality management; solid- and hazardous-waste disposal; and quality control and management of the air resources. A civil engineer may specialize in one or several of these activities and may further specialize in a particular function, such as design or management. The work frequently provides close associations with the legal profession, urban and regional planners, economists, public officials, biologists, chemists, financial consultants, architects, and system analysts. Education and practice require a consideration not only of the technological-science aspects of a particular problem but also of its relationship to social, economic, political, and environmental constraints. To accommodate these wide interests, the department is organized into six academic areas: construction management; transportation engineering; geotechnical engineering; structural engineering and mechanics; environmental engineering; and water resources, hydrology, and hydraulic systems.
