The term cybernetics stems from the Greek kybernetes , steersman, governor, pilot, or rudder — the same root as government ). Cybernetics is a broad field of study, but the essential goal of cybernetics is to understand and define the functions and processes of systems that have goals, and that participate in circular, causal chains that move from action to sensing to comparison with desired goal to action. Studies of this field are all ultimately means of examining different forms of systems and applying what is known to make the design and function of any system, including artificial systems such as business management, more

3. Cybernetics - A Definition
Norbert Wiener coined “cybernetics” around 1948 to denote the study of “teleological mechanisms” systems that embody goals.

What is the derivation of the word "cyberspace"? teleological mechanisms William Gibson, who coined the term " cyberspace " in 1982, as quoted in New York Times Sunday Magazine, 19 August 2007
Artificial Intelligence and cybernetics: Aren't they the same thing? Or, isn't one about computers and the other about robots? The answer to these questions is emphatically, No. Researchers in Artificial Intelligence (AI) use computer technology to build intelligent machines; they consider implementation (that is, working examples) as the most important result. Practitioners of cybernetics use models of organizations, feedback, goals, and conversation to understand the capacity and limits of any system (technological, biological, or social); they consider powerful descriptions as the most important result. The field of AI first flourished in the 1960s as the concept of universal computation [Minsky 1967], the cultural view of the brain as a computer, and the availability of digital computing machines came together to paint a future where computers were at least as smart as humans. The field of cybernetics came into being in the late 1940s when concepts of information, feedback, and regulation [Wiener 1948] were generalized from specific applications in engineering to systems in general, including systems of living organisms, abstract intelligent processes, and language.

    Definitions of Cybernetics
There are many definitions of cybernetics and many individuals who have influenced Cybernetics takes as its domain the design or discovery and application of principles of regulation and communication. Cybernetics treats not things but ways of behaving. It does not ask "what is this thing?" but "what does it do?" and "what can it do?" Because numerous systems in the living, social and technological world may be understood in this way, cybernetics cuts across many traditional disciplinary boundaries. The concepts which cyberneticians develop thus form a metadisciplinary language by which we may better understand and modify our world.

    What This Is
This is a list, with reviews, of suggested books, periodicals, television shows and computer programs for a classroom curriculum or individual study in cybernetics and systems theory. It does not (yet) include a course plan, glossary, or extended bibliography. I was asked to write this by some teachers who received a copy of class notes I prepared for a course in "Understanding Whole Systems" sixteen years ago at the University of California at Santa Cruz. They asked how I would revise it based on what I know today. This document answers that question. [A similar web site exists at the Principia Cybernetica Project . - ABS 8/11/96]

The following links provide general background information on the field of Cybernetics and Systems Theory , an interdisciplinary academic domain. This material was collected and is provided in the context of the Principia Cybernetica Project , but can be consulted independently of the rest of the project. Although there are relatively few research centers and even fewer educational programs devoted to the domain, a lot of activity is going on in between established departments. This is shown by the number of associations , conferences and journals active in the domain. The best way of getting acquainted with the main ideas of cybernetics and systems theory is to read a few of the classic books or papers defining the domain. Some of these books are freely available through our Principia Cybernetica library . Other, specific bibliographic references can be found in the library database of the Department of Medical Cybernetics and AI at the University of Vienna. There also exists more general reference material , including our own Web Dictionary of basic concepts.

The Major is designed primarily for highly motivated students interested in interdisciplinary activities in life sciences, behavioral sciences, and the computational, control, communication and information branches of engineering and computer sciences. Primary emphasis is on integrative computational and systems biology studies. Students have several options for in-depth studies: a coherent integration of courses selected from one of five designated concentrations in Systems Biology, Bioinformatics, Neurosystems, Biomedical Systems or Computer Systems; or from the broader concentration areas of life sciences, behavioral sciences, engineering and applied mathematical sciences, or an integration of courses from these areas.
The Major is appropriate preparation for employment or for graduate studies in any of the concentration areas, with emphasis on interdisciplinary activities. It is especially geared toward interdisciplinary computational, biosystems/systems biology training of research-oriented students, preparing them for graduate/postgraduate studies and research. It is also appropriate preparation for professional school studies in medicine, public health, dentistry, business, engineering and law.

ATLANTA (CNN) Ever since our ancestors first started making tools, humanity has been trying to go beyond its limitations to improve on the way our bodies interact with nature. Over thousands of years we have been able to develop the way we work with, and adapt to, our environment by using an increasingly sophisticated array of tools. Now high-tech tools, implanted or attached to the human body, are bringing biology and technology together to repair, replace and augment human ability.

cybernetics Last modified: Thursday, May 22, 1997 Originally the study of biological and artificial control systems, cybernetics has evolved into many disparate areas of study, with research in many disciplines, including computer science , social philosophy and epistemology. In general, cybernetics is concerned with discovering what mechanisms control systems , and in particular, how systems regulate themselves. The term was first coined by Norbert Weiner in 1943. "Compared to the analytical procedure of classical science with resolution into component elements and one-way or linear causality as basic category, the investigation of organized wholes of many variables requires new categories of interaction, transaction, organization, teleology..." Ludwig von Bertalanffy "This new development has unbounded possibilities for good and for evil." Norbert Wiener , Cybernetics, 1948
    Introduction
Many of the concepts used within the complexity sciences derive originally from work done in the mid 20th Century on Cybernetics (Wiener), based on the earlier work on Information Theory (Shannon), and General Systems Theory (von Bertalanffy). These ideas were all attempts to quantify in a rigorous way the treatment of systems as an interdisciplinary science. In other words they were a break from the old views that specialist subjects required specialist ideas. Additionally cybernetics is concerned with the control of systems, the issues of regulation and stability that also face us in the treatment of complex systems. Most recent work on cybernetics has related to mechanical systems (e.g. robots and bionics), but these ideas have always been more general and here we shall restate their relevance to biological and social situations.
    Systems
Systems are the lifeblood of complexity thinking and can be defined as a group of interacting parts functioning as a whole and distinguishable from its surroundings by recognizable boundaries. Systems have properties that are emergent, that are not intrinsically found within any of the component parts. They exist only at a higher level of description (e.g. an engine isn't a feature of valves, pistons, or any set of parts in isolation, they have to be suitably inter-connected).

It may be that we haven't exhausted the potential of a science of communication and control, but I think at this point the burden of proof would be on the optimists. Dissolved? Not entirely.
