Photographs and full-resolution images are available at: http://www.gemini.edu/media/images_2002-11.html
Thanks to a unique combination of international cooperation and the latest Internet technology, Gemini Observatory is now well on its way to becoming the world's first global "cyber observatory".
With funding and support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Gemini has succeeded in blazing a new Internet pathway which will provide its globally separated twin telescopes with a reliable data transfer connection able to handle the enormous amounts of scientific information created by Gemini's sophisticated instrumentation.
This innovative link was further made possible with the support and technical assistance of Internet2, a university led networking research and development consortium; and AMPATH, a high-performance Internet "gateway" to South American research and educational networks led by Florida International University (FIU) in Miami.
"Gemini South is the first U.S. managed research program in South America to access the Internet2 network infrastructure," said Gemini Director of Operations Dr. James Kennedy, who led the Gemini initiative for establishing the new link.

Psycho-Cybernetics
By Maxwell Maltz
by Michael C. Gray June 29, 2001 Psycho-Cybernetics is a classic personal development book. Most of the current speakers in the area of personal development, including Zig Ziglar, Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy and others owe a debt to Maxwell Maltz for the foundation of their material. The psychological training of Olympic athletes is also based on the concepts in Psycho-Cybernetics. Maxwell Maltz was a cosmetic surgeon. He was amazed when, after he had performed some impressive reconstruction procedures, patients would complain they couldn't see the difference! "I still feel ugly." Maltz recognized that, in addition to the reconstruction work on the outside, the patient needed to have reconstruction work on the "inside," on the patient's self-image. The self image is a mental picture that each person has of himself or herself. It includes our beliefs about our abilities and deficiencies, whether we are popular or not, and so forth. Some of these beliefs may have been true at one time, but are no longer true. Until those beliefs are changed, our behavior will continue to be defined by those beliefs. For example, a person may have had a traumatic automobile accident when he or she was driving. He or she may be afraid to drive because of the self-image as a "bad driver." Until that self-image is changed, that person will continue to be limited by that belief.

Computing
Cybernetics /si:`b*-net'iks/ The study of control and communication in living and man-made systems. The term was first proposed by Norbert Wiener in the book referenced below. Originally, cybernetics drew upon electrical engineering, mathematics, biology, neurophysiology, anthropology, and psychology to study and describe actions, feedback, and response in systems of all kinds. It aims to understand the similarities and differences in internal workings of organic and machine processes and, by formulating abstract concepts common to all systems, to understand their behaviour. Modern "second-order cybernetics " places emphasis on how the process of constructing models of the systems is influenced by those very systems, hence an elegant definition - "applied epistemology". Related recent developments (often referred to as sciences of complexity) that are distinguished as separate disciplines are artificial intelligence, neural networks, systems theory, and chaos theory, but the boundaries between those and

Constructivism, Cybernetics and One Laptop Per Child

Inside Constructivism Constructivism gets its name from "Constructing Knowledge" in the students mind. Constructivism has its roots in Kant's synthesis of rationalism and empiricism, where it is noted that the subject has no direct access to external reality. The problem with pure theoretical Constructivism:
Constructing and learning together "Since constructivism rejects any direct verification of knowledge by comparing the constructed model with the outside world, its most important issue is how the subject can choose between different constructions to select the "right one". Without such a selection criterion, constructivism would lapse into absolute relativism: the assumption that any model is as adequate as any other. The two most often used criteria are coherence, agreement between the different cognitive patterns within an individual's brain, and consensus, agreement between the different cognitive patterns of different individuals." Francis Heylighen The flaws in theoretical Constructivism do not mean that it is worthless. It just has to be refashioned for use in real life. This would be the applied version of Constructivism. Once you infuse Constructivism with some realness, it has some valid points. To understand why the current schools don't work, you have to understand their origin...

Obscure major brings together math, engineering and biology
When fourth-year student John Vaszari tells people what his major is, questions about robots and artificial intelligence frequently follow. At interviews for medical school this fall, Vaszari has given the same well-rehearsed explanation to doctors and admissions boards when they ask the inevitable question about “cybernetics.” An undergraduate interdepartmental program at UCLA since 1972, cybernetics is the study of control and communication processes in biological systems – cell movement translated into the language of engineering, protein interactions described with math equations. And, yes, sometimes that means robots. More than ever, current scientific research is undertaken in an environment of interdisciplinary collaboration. Biochemists and geneticists have paired with engineers to compile the massive data from the Human Genome Project, for example.

Game over for Hillary?
jim The news is coming together, and it points to Barack. Bill Richardson will make history today. His endorsement of Barack Obama will start a cascade of endorsements that will bring the swift end of the Clinton campaign. Why? Because the professional observers have long believed that there is close to a zero chance that Hillary can win the nomination. She has been battling to undo party rules in Michigan and Florida. This was her last hail Mary attempt to block Barack, and neither is going to happen, as of yesterday. Without them she has essentially no chance of winning the nomination, no matter how well she does in her one remaining stronghold, Pennsylvania. So now party leaders see that the time has come to unify the Democrats, and none too soon. Bill Richardson is moving for unity today. This is his own very important leadership intervention, perfectly timed. It will be catalytic. Expect others to follow quickly. Expect Hillary to suspend her campaign within days, in the interest of unity.
Illusions of control=dangerous
jim More important, the mix of autocracy and democracy (invasion and occupation and elections) was so transparently wrong that it turned off both democratic and autocratic leaderes in the nation. And it frightened both democratic and autocratic governments around the region.
