Welcome to Environmental Inquiry!
Environmental Inquiry (EI) is a collection of ideas and resources to support student projects on a wide range of topics in the environmental sciences. How can I get started?
If you're looking for online resources related to one of our books, click on the appropriate book cover below. Otherwise, a good way to start is by browsing through this list of topics for student projects How does EI work?
EI includes two levels of inquiry, modeled after professional scientific research. First, students learn specific research protocols . Using these protocols, they conduct interactive research projects. Downloadable forms help students design feasible experiments and then analyze, interpret, and present the results. Discussion boards and an online peer review forum provide opportunities for interaction with fellow students. Who can participate?
This EI website is designed for use by any interested high school students and teachers. Our college-level EI website at Penn State University is for undergraduate students and faculty.

As the Olympic games draw closer, the Chinese government is attempting to improve the country’s air and water quality to satisfy commitments made to the Olympic committee. Beijing is required to meet international standards on four major pollutants — sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, airborne particulates, and chemical oxygen demand, a measure of water pollution. The city is known for its notorious smog which is raising concern among athletes who worry their health may be negatively affected. To improve the air quality, cities in the region are reducing emissions from some of their most heavily polluting steel and concrete plants, while neighboring provinces are restricting their coal-fired emissions. Thus far, the city has successfully met the standards for all but the airborne particulates. BIODIVERSITY

Environmental Quality Incentives Program
Updated The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) was reauthorized in the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 (Farm Bill) to provide a voluntary conservation program for farmers and ranchers that promotes agricultural production and environmental quality as compatible national goals. EQIP offers financial and technical help to assist eligible participants install or implement structural and management practices on eligible agricultural land. EQIP offers contracts with a minimum term that ends one year after the implementation of the last scheduled practices and a maximum term of ten years. These contracts provide incentive payments and cost-shares to implement conservation practices. Persons who are engaged in livestock or agricultural production on eligible land may participate in the EQIP program. EQIP activities are carried out according to an environmental quality incentives program plan of operations developed in conjunction with the producer that identifies the appropriate conservation practice or practices to address the resource concerns. The practices are subject to NRCS technical standards adapted for local conditions. EQIP may cost-share up to 75 percent of the costs of certain conservation practices. Incentive payments may be provided for up to three years to encourage producers to carry out management practices they may not otherwise use without the incentive. However, limited resource producers and beginning farmers and ranchers may be eligible for cost-shares up to 90 percent. Farmers and ranchers may elect to use a certified third-party provider for technical assistance. An individual or entity may not receive, directly or indirectly, cost-share or incentive payments that, in the aggregate, exceed $450,000 for all EQIP contracts entered during the term of the Farm Bill.

Shedding Light on Light Quality
Two terms commonly used to refer to light sources — color temperature and color rendering index — tell us about the quality of light, but can at times be counter-intuitive. Lights with a low color temperature, for example, actually feel 'warmer' on the color spectrum. Excerpted from the article: "It's no wonder that confusion abounds regarding light quality. We talk about color temperature color rendering index , tells us how accurately a light source shows off colors, but what does that mean?"
