HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning) refers to the equipment, distribution network, and terminals that provide either collectively or individually the heating, ventilating, or air-conditioning processes to a building. HVAC systems provide HVAC accounts for 40% to 60% of the energy used in U.S. commercial and residential buildings. This represents an opportunity for energy savings using proven technologies and design concepts. HVAC systems have a significant effect on the health, comfort, and productivity of occupants. Issues like user discomfort, improper ventilation, and poor indoor air quality are linked to HVAC system design and operation and can be improved by better mechanical and ventilation systems. In existing buildings, envelope upgrades are often necessary to maximize comfort and energy efficiency, such as reducing envelope leakage. The best HVAC design considers all the interrelated building systems while addressing indoor air quality, energy consumption, and environmental benefit. Optimizing the design and benefits requires that your mechanical system designer and your architect address these issues early in the schematic design phase and continually revise subsequent decisions throughout the remaining design process. It is also essential that you implement well-thought-out

    Significant Points
    • Employment is projected to grow as fast as the average. Job prospects are expected to be excellent. Employers prefer to hire those who have completed technical school training or a formal apprenticeship.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems consist of many mechanical, electrical, and electronic components, such as motors, compressors, pumps, fans, ducts, pipes, thermostats, and switches. In central forced air heating systems, for example, a furnace heats air, which is then distributed via a system of metal or fiberglass ducts. Technicians must be able to maintain, diagnose, and correct problems throughout the entire system. To do this, they adjust system controls to recommended settings and test the performance of the system using special tools and test equipment. Technicians follow blueprints or other specifications to install oil, gas, electric, solid-fuel, and multiple-fuel heating systems and air-conditioning systems. After putting the equipment in place, they install fuel and water supply lines, air ducts and vents, pumps, and other components. They may connect electrical wiring and controls and check the unit for proper operation. To ensure the proper functioning of the system, furnace installers often use combustion test equipment, such as carbon dioxide testers, carbon monoxide testers, combustion analyzers, and oxygen testers. These tests ensure that the system will operate safely and at peak efficiency.

Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (hvac) may be the biggest user of energy in your building about 42% of your total energy bill.
    http://www.bge.com/portal/site/bge/menuitem.271f97492d1f3ab509c031e0da6176a0/
Printable Version HVAC Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) may be the biggest user of energy in your building - about 42% of your total energy bill. To trim those bills remember to turn it off when not needed; run it less; and make it more efficient. Get the most out of your HVAC. Controlling thermostat settings
    • During the summer months, set your thermostat at 78 degrees or higher. For every degree warmer you'll save about 2% on your electric bill. During the heating season, keeping the temperature a little lower can really pay. Your savings will depend on how much you lower the thermostat setting and how cold the climate is. Place a locking device over thermostats, if necessary, to keep employees from adjusting the temperature. Eliminate unnecessary use of your HVAC system during unoccupied hours. When your building is unoccupied, adjust the heating and cooling system's temperature accordingly. Install a programmable thermostat or a time clock to help ensure regular temperature modifications and early morning comfort.
    Properly maintaining your HVAC system
    • Replace air filters regularly Make sure your thermostats give true readings. If a thermostat setting is 78 degrees but the real temperature is 75 degrees, the cooling units are running much more than necessary.
