Library of Congress The Thesaurus for Graphic Materials is a tool for indexing visual materials by subject and genre/format. The thesaurus includes more than 7,000 subject terms to index topic shown or reflected in pictures, and 650 genre/format terms to index types of photographs, prints, design drawings, ephemera and other categories. New terms are added regularly. TGM is searchable through the Prints and Photographs Online Catalog (PPOC). [ Search TGM view PPOC introduction As of October 2007, the Thesaurus for Graphic Materials I: Subject Terms (TGM I) and the Thesaurus for Graphic Materials II: Genre and Physical Characteristic Terms (TGM II) were merged into a single vocabulary, the Thesaurus for Graphic Materials , and migrated to new software. Application guidelines for genre/format terms (TGM II) and a separate genre/format term list for downloading will continue to be available at the TGM II home page Although the thesaurus content remains essentially the same, there are some minor changes in field structure and labeling. For example, Public Note is now called Scope Note. Additionally, new fields were added to clarify term usage. For further information on these changes see "

Going green is good, especially with St. Patrick's Day and Spring coming this month and Earth Day next month! One way to go green is to dive into a new program called Exploring Aquatic Ecosystems and take students in Grades 5-8 on a journey to discover:
  • The life within lakes, wetlands, rivers, estuaries and oceans Facts about the earth's aquatic ecosystems Ways to use art to introduce people to the magnificence of aquatic life A global view of the challenge to keep the world's water supply safe and clean Inspiration to become involved in conservation projects
This unique program is a collaboration of Wyland Foundation, Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Blue Star Education. It has the award-winning art of Wyland, the world's premier marine life artist. It has the science of Dr. Sylvia Earle, an aquanaut, marine ecosystems protector and explorer in residence of the National Geographic Society. It has the teacher-friendly components that only Blue Star Education can provide. And it is aligned to national and state standards.
