    The Metric System
History : created at the end of the 18th Century to provide a consistent system of units amidst a wide variety of different standards. Previously each area had its own units inherited from earlier times, generally known as "pounds" or "inches" and other "feet". A "cubit" for instance was the length from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger. Problem was, these had different meanings. If a rundlet was worth 16 gallons in a town and 18 gallons in another town, just imagine the profit an astute businessman could generate ... The metric system became compulsory in France on Dec.10, 1799 (Napoleon was First Consul) and, being practical, spread slowly across Europe. Not without resistance : a few years later, even France came back to the old system for several years. Japan made it official in 1868 and Russia in 1917. England was (of course) the last European country to adopt it : the adaptation period began in 1965 and was to end officially in 1980.

Welcome to the Department of Metallurgical Engineering Metallurgical Engineering involves the study, innovation, design, implementation, and improvement of processes that transform mineral resources and metals into useful products that improve the quality of our lives.  Metals provide the foundation for our modern way of life.  We need metals to generate electricity to drive our electronic age society as well as for vehicles, buildings, machines, and home appliances.  Metals come from minerals that must be physically separated and chemically processed in order to transform them into the important products we use everyday.  Metallurgical engineers work to meet the mineral and metal product needs of our modern civilization in an environmentally responsible way by designing processes and products that minimize waste, maximize energy efficiency, increase performance, and facilitate recycling.

For several years now, Russia has been on a continuing path of brisk economic growth. In recent years, the country's gross domestic product (GDP) has averaged annual increases of around 6 percent. Also of importance, the price for Russian oil, the country's mainstay export, has been simultaneously increasing on an annual basis. High crude oil prices have triggered a multiplier effect, leading to an increased production in other industries within Russia. As a result, the current modernization requirement of the country's overall economy is enormous.

December 1997 The Metallurgy of Copper Wire
    By Dr. Horace Pops
    Essex Group, Inc.
Introduction Conductor Requirements Applications Production of Rod and Wire ... Summary Introduction Copper is the preferred and predominant choice in the electrical industry because of its high conductivity, both electrical and thermal. In order to obtain the required properties, unalloyed high purity copper is almost always used. This article discusses the rationale for this choice, and pays particular attention to the underlying metallurgical principles. It is intended to serve as a technical discussion of pertinent developments spanning the past several decades in the copper wire industry. Conductor Requirements Considerable progress has been made in recent years to explain the electronic nature of the noble metals, i.e., copper, silver, and gold. These elements exhibit high conductivity because their conduction electrons show relatively little resistance to movement under an electric field. Copper in particular is an excellent conductor because outermost electrons have a large mean free path (about 100 atomic spacings) between collisions. The electrical resistivity is inversely related to this mean free path. Several electrically conductive metals are lighter than copper, but since they would require larger cross-sections to carry the same current, are unacceptable if limited space is a major requirement (e.g., in small electric motors). Consequently, aluminum is used mainly when excessive weight could become a problem. Copper possesses the best characteristics for commercial applications, inasmuch as silver must be dismissed because of its prohibitively high cost.
