Proposed undersea cable would double electricity imports from Russia
The Russian state nuclear power company Rosenergoatom has proposed setting up a large undersea electric cable to Finland. The cable, which would run from the south shore of the Gulf of Finland to the Finnish city of Kotka, could nearly double the amount of electricity that Finland imports from Russia. Fingrid, the company that operates the national electricity grid in Finland, opposes granting permission for the project. In a statement to the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Fingrid says that the regional grid in the southeast of Finland operates at maximum capacity, and could not handle the additional power. Proponents of the project see the treatment of the initiative as a test of how free the Finnish electricity market really is.

Improving Nuclear Plant Safety
Design Safety Group Starts Experiment with UNM
A new effort underway between Los Alamos National Laboratory and the University of New Mexico will help nuclear power plants improve their safety plans and designs. The project, sponsored by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is designed to examine the chemistry that might occur within the thousands of feet of piping within a nuclear power plant. The scientists want to know, in the event of a break in a main cooling water line serving the reactor vessel, would chemical debris be formed that could plug key screens and add to the accident's severity?
Thinking Ahead
Los Alamos Design, Safety and Risk Analysis is the group running the experiments, and one staffer noted, "If we can understand the chemical reactions that could occur in such a situation, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will be able to make any needed design alterations so that reactors, both those in use and those in the future, will not be vulnerable." The Laboratory and University teams have built a grid of pipes and conduit to replicate the reactor setup, and a series of experiments are underway to test the system and analyze the chemistry occurring in such a scenario.

How does a boiling water reactor work?
In the nuclear reactor a small part of the mass of the nucleus is transformed into energy in a fission process according to Einstein's famous formula E=mc2. This energy is used to boil water and create steam that sets large turbin blades in motion. The electricity is produced by the generators which are placed on the same axis as the rotating turbines. The used steam goes from the turbine to a condenser, or heat exchanger, where cold water cools the steam into water again and which is pumped back to the reactor

Posted by at 10:37 AM Can you digg it? A survey released a couple of days ago (yes, I'm still catching up), by the Civil Society Institute found that 61 percent of Americans are opposed to building more nuclear power plants to solve the energy and global warming crisis. Grist has already written about this, so I only have one thing to add: I think the wording of the question is critical. Note that the survey examined the "energy and global warming crisis." I wonder whether it would have scored nearly as high if they had just asked about the "global warming crisis". June 01, 2006 McCain and Nuclear Power
Posted by at 10:03 AM Can you digg it? I've documented McCain's love affair with nuclear power before, so that isn't the reason I am bringing up this story that ran in the Concord Monitor last week. I just want to point out two things: 1) How absurd is this quote from McCain: Nuclear power "is safe. The technology is here," McCain said, speaking to a crowd of about 200 at a breakfast hosted by The New Hampshire Federation of Republican Women. "It's a NIMBY (not in my backyard) problem, and a waste-disposal problem. It is not a technological problem." Uh? So the waste-disposal problem isn't a technological problem? Given that no one really knows what to do with this stuff, I'd have to say it's a technological problem.

Should We Build More Nuclear Power Plants?
I have to admit that for a long time, I’ve had a lot of qualms about nuclear power as a source of electricity. I was in college in Pennsylvania during the Three Mile Island accident in 1979, and I remember being downwind as a pretty scary experience. (The alarmist antinuclear thriller The China Syndrome , which I saw the weekend after the accident, added a bit to my anxiety, especially that line of dialogue about a nuclear meltdown’s potential to render an area the size of Pennsylvania uninhabitable.) Fortunately, the partial core meltdown of TMI’s unit 2 reactor was brought under control before a disaster of gigantic proportions could occur. But seven years later, when a reactor suffered a steam explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the then-Soviet Union, the Soviets and their European neighbors weren’t so lucky. The accident spread radiation as far as the UK and Sweden, and a 2005 international report estimated that the area surrounding the stricken reactor will suffer as many as 4,000 additional deaths from cancer. After TMI and Chernobyl, I figured, nuclear power was pretty much dead. The only concerns left, I figured, were the problems of safely maintaining the aging nuclear power plants already in existence, and figuring out what to do with the

Why not nuclear power?
Download
In the face of growing energy-related problems such as climate change, acid rain and local air pollution, nuclear power has been promoted by interested industries and certain governments as a clean source of energy which could help to reduce energy-related human impact on the environment. WWF strongly opposes this view. Replacing fossil fuel fired power stations with nuclear energy simply replaces one fundamental environmental problem with another. It is clear that nuclear power remains particularly dangerous and difficult to control. This has been demonstrated by the accidents at Chernobyl, Russia, in 1986 and at Tokaimura, Japan, in 1999. WWF believes that nuclear power is not a sustainable source of energy because it is a huge safety risk
  • The entire commercial chain of the processing of nuclear raw materials from nuclear mining; operating nuclear power stations; handling nuclear waste and finally re-processing, is full of leaks and contamination and produces a highly toxic legacy for thousands of years to come.
