Optics explains optical phenomena The field of optics usually describes the behavior of visible infrared , and ultraviolet light; however because light is an electromagnetic wave , analogous phenomena occur in X-rays microwaves radio waves, and other forms of electromagnetic radiation . Optics can thus be regarded as a sub-field of electromagnetism . Some optical phenomena depend on the quantum nature of light relating some areas of optics to quantum mechanics . In practice, the vast majority of optical phenomena can be accounted for using the electromagnetic description of light, as described by Maxwell's Equations The field of optics has its own identity, societies, and conferences. The pure science aspects of the field are often called optical science or optical physics . Applied optical sciences are often called optical engineering . Applications of optical engineering related specifically to illumination systems are called illumination engineering. Each of these disciplines tends to be quite different in its applications, technical skills, focus, and professional affiliations. More recent innovations in optical engineering are often categorized as

Optics
The scientific study of light. Physical optics is concerned with the creation, nature, and properties of light. Psychological optics pertains to the role of light in vision. Geometrical optics deals with the properties of reflection and refraction of light, as part of the study of mirrors, lenses, and optical fibers.

As you can see from the dictionary definition above, the study of optics falls into three general categories: light itself, what it is and how it behaves; How we perceive light through the sense of sight; and how light can be manipulated through such processes as reflection and refraction. Although we talk of these categories as if they were separate and distinct, actually the whole reality of sight and vision constantly involves all of these categories in various combinations. For example, consider a rainbow. This visual phenomenon not only involves both reflection and refraction, but also is a practical demonstration that different colors of light refract differently, even under fixed circumstances. For an excellent discussion of rainbows and their characteristics, take a look at

    Photographic optics
Here is a collection of illustrated articles on the chief causes of image degradation in photography. Currently available pages can be accessed via hyperlinks. The reader should keep in mind that the articles are about principles of photographic optics and not about tests of specific lenses. Also, most of the phenomena have been captured on film. Since a film acts as no more than a light-sensitive medium, the examples equally apply to a digital recorder array. In the few cases where the nature of the recording medium is important, this will be emphasized.
    Seidel aberrations
    • Spherical aberration occurs when the lens margins focus the light closer to -or further from- the sensor than the lens center. Coma is associated with off-axis image points being smeared out in the characteristic comet shape. Astigmatism implies that a lens can be sharper in one direction than another. The archetypal example is that of a wheel where the spokes and the rim are not rendered sharp simultaneously. Field curvature leads to a curved image surface. Although the image can be sharp on this surface, it is incompatible with a flat sensor.

Excerpts. [Atomic Theory] It seems to me farther, that those particles have not only a force of inertia accompanied with such passive laws of motion as naturally result from that force, but also that they are moved by certain active principles, such as is that of gravity, and that which causes fermentation, and the cohesion of bodies. These principles I consider, not as occult qualities, supposed to result from the specific forms of things, but as general laws of nature, by which the things themselves are formed; their truth appearing to us by phenomena, though their causes be not yet discovered. For these are manifest qualities, and their causes only are occult. And the Aristotelians in infinitum and matter is not necessarily in all places, it may be also allowed that God is able to create particles of matter of several sizes and figures, and in several proportions to space, and perhaps of different densities and forces, and thereby to vary the laws of nature, and make worlds of several sorts in several parts of the universe. At least, I see nothing of contradiction in all this.
