Jump to: navigation search Welding is a fabrication process that joins materials, usually metals or thermoplastics , by causing coalescence . This is often done by melting the workpieces and adding a filler material to form a pool of molten material (the weld puddle ) that cools to become a strong joint, with pressure sometimes used in conjunction with heat , or by itself, to produce the weld. This is in contrast with soldering and brazing , which involve melting a lower-melting-point material between the workpieces to form a bond between them, without melting the workpieces. Arc welding Many different energy sources can be used for welding, including a gas flame , an electric arc , a laser , an electron beam, friction , and ultrasound . While often an industrial process, welding can be done in many different environments, including open air, underwater and in space . Regardless of location, however, welding remains dangerous, and precautions must be taken to avoid burns, electric shock , poisonous fumes, and overexposure to ultraviolet light Until the end of the 19th century, the only welding process was

Introduction Welding
is the process of permanently joining two or more metal parts, by melting both materials. The molten materials quickly cool, and the two metals are permanently bonded. Spot welding and seam welding are two very popular methods used for sheet metal parts. Spot welding is primarily used for joining parts that normally upto 3 mm (0.125 in) thickness. Spot-weld diameters range from 3 mm to 12.5 mm (0.125 to 0.5 in) in diameter. Top of Page Materials Low carbon steel is most suitable for spot welding. Higher carbon content or alloy steels tend to form hard welds that are brittle and could crack. This tendency can be reduced by tempering. Austenitic Stainless steels in the 300 series can be spot welded as also the Ferritic stainless steels. Martensitic stainless steels are not suitable since they are very hard. Aluminums can be welded using high power and very clean oxide free surfaces. Cleaning the surface to be oxide-free, adds extra costs (that can be avoided with low carbon steel).

  • About 2 out of 3 jobs are in manufacturing industries. Training ranges from a few weeks of school or on-the-job training to several years of combined school and on-the-job training. Employment is projected to grow more slowly than average. Job prospects should be excellent as employers report difficulty finding enough qualified people.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Welding is the most common way of permanently joining metal parts. In this process, heat is applied to metal pieces, melting and fusing them to form a permanent bond. Because of its strength, welding is used in shipbuilding, automobile manufacturing and repair, aerospace applications, and thousands of other manufacturing activities. Welding also is used to join beams when constructing buildings, bridges, and other structures and to join pipes in pipelines, power plants, and refineries. There are over 80 different welding processes that a welder can employ. Some are performed manually, and the work is entirely controlled by the welder. Others are semiautomatic, and the welder uses machinery, such as a wire feeder, to perform welding tasks.

What is Welding?
The welding industry has a long track record of health and safety, based on the development of guidelines for safe welding practices and extensive welder training programs.
Welding Safety Welding is the most economical and efficient way to join metals permanently. It is the only way of joining two or more pieces of metal to make them act as a single piece.
Vision for Welding Welding ranks high among industrial processes and involves more sciences than those involved in any other industrial process.
Underwater Welding Welding involves a variety of different inputs and basic materials. Learn about the key components that make up a range of welding consumables.
Machines and Other Welding Equipment Welding can trace its historic development back to ancient times. The earliest examples come from the Bronze Age.
