About the GRE TEST and GRE EXAM
WHAT DOES THE GRE TEST MEASURE? The GRE is an aptitude test. Like all aptitude tests, it must choose a medium in which to measure intellectual ability. The GRE has chosen math and English. The question isdoes it measure aptitude for graduate school? The GRE's ability to predict performance in school is as poor as the SAT's. This is to be expected since the tests are written by the same company (ETS) and are similar. The GRE's verbal section, however, is significantly harder (more big words), and, surprisingly, the GRE's math section is slightly easier. The GRE also includes a writing section that the SAT does not. FORMAT OF THE GRE TEST The GRE is approximately three hours long. Only two-hours-and-thirty minutes of the test count toward your scorethe experimental section is not scored.

    GRE Test Questions
Click here to see free sample flashcards. Dear Friend, Here's a little "secret" about the GRE General Test: the GRE is what we in the test preparation field call a "general aptitude" test. While some tests are looking to see what you already know, the purpose of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), offered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), is to test your ability to learn. The goal of the GRE is to make sure you have a minimum competency level to protect the integrity of the testing process. In other words, it's more about your ability to learn and process new information than what you know. This is good news for those who are serious about being prepared, because it boils down to a very simple strategy: You can succeed on the GRE by preparing in depth for the different question types and being able to take difficult questions and break them down into easier parts that you can quickly solve. Repetition and thorough preparation is a process that rewards those who are serious about being prepared, which means that succeeding on the GRE is within the reach of virtually anyone interested in learning how to handle any question they might face on test day.

Word Lists for Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Verbal Vocabulary by Sungwoo Park Following are word lists that I wrote while I was preparing myself for the Verbal part of the GRE General Test in 1998. Although they were written primarily for the Verbal part, I think they are helpful for the Analytic part as well. I think that the best strategy for GRE is to be acquainted with GRE through taking actual GRE examinations administrated by ETS, but it is undeniable that a good vocabulary is essential for excellent GRE scores. Since the Verbal part of GRE is by no means a simple examination that tests the examinees only for vocabulary, expanding your vocabulary does not always result in higher scores. You should, however, retain a large vocabulary in your brain at least on the actual GRE test day in order to obtain high scores in the Verbal part, since in some sense quite a few questions just attempt to test whether you can tell the meaning of a particular word or not. The definition of the words in the word lists is based on Barron's GRE word list (usually known as the 33000 word list), American Heritage dictionary (because of concise definition), Longman dictionary (because of precise definition), and Oxford dictionary (as a complement to Longman). I think that it is a very good practice to understand and memorize the meaning of every word in English, which you would surely agree while solving GRE questions. The word lists below are presented in the same order that I learned them in 1998 when I was preparing for a GRE test. Before printing and carrying the lists with you all the time, you should think for a while if you could benefit from the lists, and if you suppose so, how you could use them. The lists were really helpful to me, but it may not be the case for you; they may contain some words which will never appear in any GRE administration. Or you could try programs helping you to learn the vocabulary such as

Philosophy Rocks the Graduate Record Exam!
    Did you know...
Students declaring an intention to go to graduate school in Philosophy score higher on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) than all but four other major fields (out of fifty recorded by the Educational Testing Service, which runs the Graduate Record Exam)? The only fields that score higher mean scores on the combined Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical sections of the GRE are (in rank order) Physics and Astronomy, Mathematical Sciences, Materials Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. Philosophy students score higher than every other major in the Humanities and Arts, higher than every major in the Social Science, higher than every major in the Life Sciences, higher than every major in Education, higher than every major in Business, and higher than every major listed under "Other Fields." In fact, Philosophy students score higher than four out of the six majors listed in Physical Sciences, and five out of the seven listed in Engineering. Students declaring an intention to go to graduate school in Philosophy have the highest mean scores on the Verbal section of the GRE than any other major in any of the fields listed (mean score: 589). English majors also score well on this section (mean score: 561), but not as good a Philosophy majors do! Honorable mention goes to History majors in this category (mean score: 546). Philosophy majors simply

      Difficulty: Moderate
      Step 1:
Familiarize yourself with the overall format of the test. The GRE tests three main areas: verbal ability, mathematical proficiency and analytical ability. There will be two sections for each of these areas, plus an extra unscored section. The content of the unscored section will vary. Step 2:
Take as many practice GREs as possible. The more practice you get, the more familiar you'll become with the test's format, and the more comfortable you'll be when you actually take it.
