MCAT Test
The MCAT, or Medical College Admission Test, is the standardized test generally required as an adjunct to admission to any medical school in the United States. It may also be requested for admission to other health profession institutions, such as allopathic, osteopathic, podiatric, or veterinary medicine schools. It is administered by the AAMC, the Association of American Medical Colleges. The MCAT provides a standardized method of assessing how successful an individual will be in medical school and subsequently as a physician. It concentrates on the measurement of basic knowledge in the biological and physical sciences as well as verbal skills. The potential medical school applicant is encouraged to take the MCAT 18 months prior their anticipated start date. Beginning in 2007, the MCAT will be offered in a computer-based format only, with 22 test dates available per year, on both weekdays and Saturdays. The sessions can be either morning, afternoon, or in some cases an overlap of the two, and are a little less than 5 hours in length with breaks. They will be administered only at Thomson Prometric Centers. Canadian and overseas sites are also available. MCAT Practice Tests MCAT Test Information MCAT Test Study Guide MCAT Exam Flashcards The MCAT consists of 4 sections. Three of the sections pose multiple choice type of questions, Physical Sciences, Verbal Reasoning, and Biological Sciences. There is also a Writing Sample portion. The order of testing is Physical Sciences, Verbal Reasoning, Writing Sample, and then Biological Sciences. The Physical Sciences and Biological Sciences sections each have 52 questions with 70 minutes allotted for completion. In the Physical Sciences section, you will be tested on your basic knowledge of general chemistry and physics. In the Biological Sciences section, your grasp of basic biology and organic chemistry will be evaluated. Both of these portions have basically two types of questions, either independent questions requiring general knowledge of the subject area or ones where you read a passage and solve a problem based on what you have read.

Posted August 20th, 2007 by fairtest in What is the MCAT? The Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) serves as the entry screening assessment for most U.S. medical schools. Developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and administered to over 55,000 students annually, the 6-hour exam consists of 221 multiple-choice items and two essays. Divided among four sections, scores on Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Verbal Reasoning are each reported on a scale from 1 (lowest) to 15 (highest). The Writing Sample receives a score of 1 to 6, converted to an alphabetical scale ranging from J (lowest) to T (highest). The MCAT does a poor job of predicting success in medical According to the AAMC, the MCAT is designed to "assess mastery of basic concepts in biology, chemistry, and physics; facility with scientific problem solving and critical thinking; and writing skills." According to several independent researchers however, the skills the MCAT tests relate most closely to the first two years of medical school classroom work but have little relevance in predicting success during clinical training or actual practice as a physician. Like all timed writing, tackling the Writing Sample section of the MCAT is matter of preparation, including knowing the format of the test, what constitutes a strong response, and how to manage your time well. Use the guidelines below to help you approach this particular context for writing. What is the MCAT? The MCAT is the Medical College Admission Test. Everyone applying to a medical school in the United States must take this test as part of entrance requirements. The MCAT is composed of four sections: Verbal Reasoning, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, and the Writing Sample. About the Writing Section You have a total of 60 minutes to respond to two prompts in essay format. The prompts include a topic sentence (printed in bold) and then directions for completing the essay. The first line for all prompts is a general instruction that states, "Write a unified essay in which you perform the following tasks." The responses required of you are three-fold. The first step for every essay is to "Explain what you think the above statement means." The second and third requirements are described with each topic sentence. The directions typically follow the pattern of thesis antithesis , and synthesis . One of the graded requirements concerns you completing all three of these tasks. You can respond to each task in any order, but you must address each area. For the thesis portion, approach the statement from a specific stance to show you can both interpret its meaning and support your perspective. In the antithesis, examine examples contrary to your thesisthat is, you would entertain a differing interpretation of the prompt. The graders of these essays expect to see concrete examples and solid detail. In the third section, reconcile your thesis with the contradiction of your antithesis. This involves bringing some kind of larger insight to the prompt's meaning.
