MCAT
Updated on Thursday 13 September 2007 If you plan on applying to a medical school in the United States, you need to the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). The MCAT is different from every other test you have ever encountered in your academic career. Unlike the knowledge-based exams from high school and college, where the emphasis was on memorizing information, the MCAT primarily emphasizes the thought process. It is a thinking test above all else.
Format
The MCAT consists of four and three-quarter hours of multiple choice testing, plus one hour devoted to a writing sample. With all of the administrative details and three breaks, your test day experience can last for more than six hours.
The test is divided into four timed sections always appearing in the same order: Verbal Reasoning, Physical Sciences, Writing Sample, and Biological Sciences. Every section is designed to measure the higher-order thinking skills necessary for success in medical school, including analytical reasoning, abstract thinking, and problem solving.
Taking the MCAT is an intensive experience to say the least. The vast amount of content, especially in the sciences, can be especially overwhelming for many people. Success on this difficult exam requires targeted and focused preparation.

The MCAT, DAT and Other Standardized Tests
There are several standardized tests for the schools of the health professions, usually a different test for each profession. Allopathic, osteopathic and podiatric schools (with only a few exceptions) require the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT); dental schools, the Dental Admission Test (DAT); optometry schools, the Optometry Admission Test (OAT); the Veterinary College Admission Test (VCAT) has been phased out, and veterinary schools now primarily use the Graduate Record Exam (GRE); and pharmacy schools use the Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT). This website discusses the MCAT. For information on these other standardized tests, please consult the following websites:

PCAT: www.aacp.org
Description of the MCAT
The Medical College Admission Test is required by practically all allopathic, osteopathic, and podiatric medical schools in the United States and Canada. Periodically the format of the test is revised. The current version is made up of four sections: Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Verbal Reasoning, and a Writing Sample. Each of the first three sections is scored on a scale from 1 to 15, while the Writing Sample requires two essays and receives a letter grade from J (lowest) to T (highest). In January 2007, the MCAT switched from pencil-and-paper to a computerized format. As a result, the total number of multiple choice questions dropped from about 200 to about 150, and the time needed for testing has been reduced from seven or eight hours to five and a half (including optional breaks). Note: For information regarding "untimed" MCATs see the section on Physically Challenged Students.

PDF (422 K) Validity of the Medical College Admission Test for Predicting Medical School Performance.
Research Report Academic Medicine. 80(10):910-917, October 2005.
Julian, Ellen R. PhD Abstract:
Purpose: Since the introduction of the revised Medical College Admission Test (MCAT(R)) in 1991, the Association of American Medical Colleges has been investigating the extent to which MCAT scores supplement the power of undergraduate grade point averages (uGPAs) to predict success in medical school. This report is a comprehensive summary of the relationships between MCAT scores and (1) medical school grades, (2) United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step scores, and (3) academic distinction or difficulty. Method: This study followed two cohorts from entrance to medical school through residency. Students from 14 medical schools' 1992 and 1993 entering classes provided data for predicting medical school grades and academic difficulty/distinction, while their peers from all of the U.S. medical schools were used to predict performance on USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3. Regression analyses assessed the predictive power of combinations of uGPAs, MCAT scores, and undergraduate-institution selectivity. Results: Grades were best predicted by a combination of MCAT scores and uGPAs, with MCAT scores providing a substantial increment over uGPAs. MCAT scores were better predictors of USMLE Step scores than were uGPAs, and the combination did little better than MCAT scores alone. The probability of experiencing academic difficulty or distinction tended to vary with MCAT scores. MCAT scores were strong predictors of scores for all three Step examinations, particularly Step 1.
