25. Puzzle Solved: Ramanujan's Mock Theta Conjectures

Puzzle Solved: Ramanujan's Mock Theta Conjectures
However, Ramanujan's letter provided no hint of where his "mock" theta functions come from, how to derive them, and why they might be important or interesting. mock theta functions. But, despite the efforts of many mathematicians over the years, the functions themselves remained mysterious. In 1987, Freeman Dyson noted, "The mock theta functions give us tantalizing hints of a grand synthesis still to be discovered . . . . This remains a challenge for the future. " Now, Ken Ono and Kathrin Bringmann have constructed an explanatory framework that, for the first time, shows what mock theta functions are and how to derive them. They link Ramanujan's functions to mathematical objects known as modular forms, specifically to a special class of mathematical expressions known as Maass forms. Modular forms have recently played important roles in number theory, including the proof of Fermat's last theorem. Mathematician Sander P. Zwegers had made the connection between Ramanujan's functions and Maass forms in 2002, but he had focused on only a handful of examples. Ono and Bringmann had been working on Maass forms for other reasons. Then, while on a flight, Ono happened upon an old article by George Andrews on mock theta functions. He was startled to find that some of the mathematics in that paper echoed parts of Maass theory. Upon investigating the connection in greater detail with Bringmann, Ono found that it held up, providing a coherent way of understanding what mock theta functions really represent.

Having students make and test conjectures is an effective way of engaging them in learning and helping them develop their reasoning abilities.
What are Conjectures?
Conjectures by definition are inferences or judgments based on inconclusive or incomplete evidence (American Heritage Dictionary, 2006). They are statements, opinions or conclusions based on guesswork.
Conjectures are important because they impact student learning.
To Learn More. . .
Why Have Students Make and Test Conjectures?
Constructivist theory supports having students make and test conjectures. Constructivism is built on the foundations of Piaget (1950), Ausubel (1960), and Rumelhart (1991) and contends that students construct their own knowledge and are not just passive receivers of information. Students construct new knowledge based on their past experiences and previously acquired knowledge.

http://www.skypoint.com/members/waltzmn/Conjectures.html
Conjectures and Conjectural Emendation
The New Testament is full of difficult readings. There are probably hundreds of places where one scholar or another has argued that the text simply cannot be construed. Westcott and Hort, for instance, marked some five dozen passages with an asterisk as perhaps containing a primitive error. (A list of these passages is found in note 2 on page 184 of the second/third edition of Bruce M. Metzger's The Text of the New Textament.) Not all of these are nonsense, but all are difficult in some way. In classical textual criticism , the response to such "nonsense" readings is usually conjectural emendation the attempt to imagine what the author actually wrote. Such an emendation, to be successful, must of course fit the author's style and the context. It should also, ideally, explain how the "impossible" reading arose. The use of conjectural emendation in the classics especially those which survive only in single manuscripts can hardly be questioned. Even if we assume that there is no editorial activity, scribal error is always present. Thus, for instance, in Howell D. Chickering, Jr.'s edition of Beowulf

CHAPTER VIII
CONJECTURES
HAVING considered some of the more important arguments and observations that have been advanced to prove the existence or non-existence of the unicorn, we may now assume the role of the sceptic who regards the whole legend as probably a product of the fancy, asking ourselves how the belief first arose. This question plunges us at once into the remote past; it forces us to think as much as possible in the way of men whose mental habit was very different from our own; it is a question, therefore, to which no conclusive answer, carrying final conviction to all, can be expected. I shall arrange my conjectures in the order of plausibility, passing from those one feels tempted to accept immediately to others that may seem at first highly dubious. Several authoritative scholars have held that the unicorn legend derives entirely from Oriental beliefs about the rhinoceros. This was the opinion of Cuvier, for example, a man whose expert knowledge and good sense command respect, and it is an opinion in keeping with the tendency of our time to prefer the light of common day to "the light that never was". An impressive "case" can be made out for this view. The parallelism between the two traditions may be shown in the words of a famous traveller of the sixteenth century. Linschoeten says of the rhinoceros that "some think it is the right Unicorne, because that as yet there hath no other bin found, but only by hearesay and by the pictures of them. The Portingalles and those of Bengala affirme that by the River Ganges in the Kingdome of Bengala are many of these Rhinoceros, which when they will drinke the other beasts stand and waite upon them till the Rhinoceros hath drinke, and thrust their horne into the water, for he cannot drinke but his horne must be under the water because it standeth so close unto his nose and muzzle: and then after him all the other beastes doe drinke. Their hornes in India are much esteemed and used against all venime, poyson, and many other diseases . . . which is very good and most true, as I myselfe by experience have found."

The paper shows that there is a close connection between (constant) consistent conjectures in a given game and evolutionary stability of conjectures. Evolutionarily stable conjectures are consistent and consistent conjectures are the only interior candidates for evolutionary stability. Facts, Conjectures, and Improvements for Simulated Annealing
Peter Salamon, Paolo Sibani, and Richard Frost
Monographs on Mathematical Modeling and Computation 7
Simulated annealing has proved to be an easy and reliable method for finding optimal values of a problem in cases where there is no road map to possible solutions. Facts, Conjectures, and Improvements for Simulated Annealing offers an introduction to this topic for novices and provides an informative review of the area for the more expert reader. This book brings together for the first time many of the theoretical foundations for improvements to algorithms for global optimization that until now existed only in scattered research articles.
The method described in this book operates by simulating the cooling of a (usually fictitious) physical system whose possible energies correspond to the values of the objective function being minimized. The analogy works because physical systems occupy only states with the lowest energy as the temperature is lowered to absolute zero.
Audience
This book is suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students and for professionals in a wide variety of subject areas: bioinformatics, chemistry, computer science, engineering, finance, geology, mathematics, and physics.
