Conjecture is a kind of guesswork: you make a judgment based on some inconclusive or incomplete evidence and you call it a conjecture. Or you make a kind of statement, but this is based only on your opinion, or again, guesswork - this is a conjecture once again. You may be proved right or wrong. Sometimes it may take centuries for people to prove you either right or wrong. If they prove you right, your conjecture will become a theorem (but it will be probably called after the person who solved it!) However, if you have an idea that you can demonstrate is true, or you can assume to be demonstrable, you've got yourself a true THEOREM. In other words, you must provide a proof, or otherwise persuade the world that you have one. Have a look at some famous conjectures and theorems, as well as at some problems that have been giving mathematicians a reason to get up in the morning for many years (centuries in some cases!). Graffiti is a program of Siemion Fajtlowicz , a mathematician at the University of Houston. Its development began around 1985. Development of Graffiti was preceded by "Little Paul" written by Fajtlowicz's student Shui-Tain Chen. Graffiti was co-developed with Ermelinda DeLaVina from 1990 to 1993. Graffiti makes conjectures in various subfields of mathematics and in chemistry. In principle, it is domain-independent and not limited to these areas. Information about Graffiti available on the WWW has been scattered on the web pages of Fajtlowicz (email: siemion@math.uh.edu), DeLaVina (email: delavinae@uhd.edu), and Craig Larson (email: clarson@math.uh.edu). This page is meant to at least collate links to the most important information available at these sites.

Owsley Award, Southern Historical Association Winner of the 2005 C. Hugh Holman Award, Society for the Study of Southern Literature In this magisterial history of intellectual life, Michael O'Brien analyzes the lives and works of antebellum Southern thinkers and reintegrates the South into the larger tradition of American and European intellectual history. O'Brien finds that the evolution of Southern intellectual life paralleled and modified developments across the Atlantic by moving from a late Enlightenment sensibility to Romanticism and, lastly, to an early form of realism. Volume 1 describes the social underpinnings of the Southern intellect by examining patterns of travel and migration; the formation of ideas on race, gender, ethnicity, locality, and class; and the structures of discourse, expressed in manuscripts and print culture. In Volume 2, O'Brien looks at the genres that became characteristic of Southern thought. Throughout, he pays careful attention to the many individuals who fashioned the Southern mind, including John C. Calhoun, Louisa McCord, James Henley Thornwell, and George Fitzhugh.

CONJECTURES ON EVOLUTION
OF A COMMON LANGUAGE
by
Den Valdron
Part of the Exploring Barsoom Series

John Carter's Barsoom is an 'end time' world, a relict ecology which has painstaking reassembled itself after a massive planetary extinction event and environmental collapse. It isn’t controversial then, that the Barsoomian civilization, or civilizations which exist in that age are also themselves the consolidated relics of prior civilizations. Evidence of this abounds. As one example, there is the fact that almost all Barsoomians of all races speak a common language. Yet, there is ample evidence to suggest that other languages must have existed in the past. This includes the exclusion of primitive White Ape speech. The Great White Apes, notwithstanding their well deserved reputation for savagery, are also acknowledged to be intelligent. Some of them wear clothes, they employ crude weapons, they gather socially, and clearly they are seen to converse with one another. They are physically capable of speech, as we see in the brain transplant hybrids of Master Mind of Mars . However, their speech or language, whatever it is, is foreign to the common tongue.

GWOT, Pakistan, and Wretchard's Three Conjectures
I hadn't known about Wretchard's three conjectures , published in 2003; I started reading his blog only a few years ago (thanks to Shrinkwrapped for the reference). In view of the precarious situation in Pakistan, with the Taliban and Al Qaeda entrenched in the frontier tribal areas, radical Islam adherents in the military and government, and Musharraf's tenuous position, Wretchard's conjectures take on a pertinent urgency that was only prophesy immediately after 9/11. Update. February 1, 2008. Donald Sensing lays out the same idea , with fresh alarm from the recent atrocity in Baghdad in which Al Qaeda sent mentally disabled women loaded with explosives into a crowded market. More conjectures and refutations on strict transitivity
My recent suggestions for verbs so rigidly transitive that they always have an overt direct object (where it is permitted) were have and keep . There may be some others; but not the ones some people have been sending me. Andy Durdin was immediately reminded (as I should have been) of the words from the old Church of England marriage service from the Book of Common Prayer: However, I think this is one of the cases where the construction involved requires a missing object. There are lots of these constructions, and in every case it is fine for the object not to be there; but it is also fine for the object of a preposition like at not to be there: I want a wife I can love for the rest of my life
