Math 608R: Etale Cohomology and the Weil conjectures Fall 2007 MWF 1pm -1:50pm, PHY4208 Professor Niranjan Ramachandran, 4115, x5-5080 Textbooks: available online in djvu format) ( BAMS Review by N. Katz) Description: The conjectures of Andr Weil have influenced (or directed) much of 20th century algebraic geometry. These conjectures generalize the Riemann hypothesis (RH) for function fields (alias curves over finite fields), conjectured and verified in some special cases) by Emil Artin . Helmut Hasse proved RH for elliptic function fields. RH for general function fields was finally proved by Weil who then formulated his conjectures for higher dimensional algebraic varieties over finite fields. The last of this set of conjectures directly generalizes RH. The Weil conjectures are now known to be true (by work of Alexandre Grothendieck , Michael Artin Pierre Deligne , et al). This course will provide an overview of the methods and ideas which have led to the formulation and the proof of the Weil conjectures.

The class will meet TTh, 2:30-3:45pm, in SC 411, beginning October 19. Parts of these lectures will eventually be incorporated into a monograph I am writing on Stark's conjectures for the AMS/IP series Studies in Advanced Mathematics . I will hand out lecture notes from time to time.
What are Stark's conjectures?
The conjectures provide one solution to Hilbert's Twelth Problem , which challenged mathematicians of the 20th century to show how class fields may be constructed over any number field by the methods of complex analysis. For example, values of the exponential function at rational multiples of 2Pi i generate abelian extensions of the rational numbers. The conjectures are precise enough for computation. In fact, the first order zero conjectures are used in the new version of Pari to compute Hilbert Class Fields of totally real number fields.

Conjectures and Refutations

Ditch the DH
It’s Opening Day, and I don’t care what the weather’s like: spring is here. The start of the baseball season is psychological springtime, every year. You can’t explain the appeal of baseball to somebody that just doesn’t get it. It’s all tied up with childhood, the cycle of the seasons, optimism and rebirth and all that jazz. Besides, it means the warm weather is coming.
So I’m happy today. I’ll even try not to be a curmudgeon about the designated hitter. OK, I tried there for a second. Now listen up: once again this summer American League teams will play all their games in violation of the fundamental rules of baseball. Corrupted by this example, amateur teams across the country will follow suit, and countless games of baseball will be played by two teams of ten players each, with two players on each side leaving and then re-entering the game several times, in flagrant violation of the substitution rules. This infraction of baseball’s fundamental laws will enjoy the sanction of its highest governing bodies.
This is, of course, a scandal. But sadly, the designated hitter doesn’t provoke arguments any more. There just aren’t many people around making serious and principled arguments against it. Unless we can revive the outrage, we risk seeing this abomination become a permanent and unquestioned part of the game.

Jump to: navigation search In mathematics , a conjecture is a mathematical statement which appears likely to be true, but has not been formally proven to be true under the rules of mathematical logic . Once a conjecture is formally proven true it is elevated to the status of theorem and may be used afterwards without risk in the construction of other formal mathematical proofs . Until that time, mathematicians may use the conjecture on a provisional basis, but any resulting work is itself provisional until the underlying conjecture is cleared up. In scientific philosophy Karl Popper pioneered the use of the term "conjecture" to indicate a proposition which is presumed to be real, true, or genuine, mostly based on inconclusive grounds, in contrast with a hypothesis (hence theory axiom principle ), which is a testable statement based on accepted grounds.

If they like our bloody play All that's needed is a send-off today from the critics, and "Mac beth," starring Patrick Stewart at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, will come big-footing on to Broadway, shaking up the Tony Award terrain. This highly stylized production, which uses video projections, buckets of blood and special effects galore, was a hit in London and is an extremely tight ticket at BAM. Emanuel Azenberg , the veteran producer behind "The Odd Couple" and "Movin' Out," has quietly met with theater owners to see where "Macbeth" could land in this packed season. It's a big production, so it needs a big theater. One possibility is the Imperial, now home to the critically acclaimed "August: Osage County."

One of the phone calls I made this Christmas was to customer support at Netflix NFLX . I had bought a year of the video-rental service for my parents, and I wondered why the company was demanding their credit card number when the subscription was, after all, a gift. That's a quibble that I wish Netflix would fix, but my point here is this: I ended up on hold for a while, and it got me thinking why are so many people calling Netflix on Christmas ? Don't they have better things to do? Or is Netflix becoming a popular enough gift that it will see a sizable bump in subscriptions this quarter? I asked Netflix that question, and I was told the company doesn't give out subscriber data before its earnings report. But the anecdotal evidence is pretty strong. I chatted up one of the support staff and found that, yes, lots of people were giving Netflix for Christmas.

A line from a poem by the Russian troubador-poet Vladimir Vysotsky has recently taken on a new and contradictory meaning. It says that "one in every four" people has Russian roots. For the Russian media, which often quoted this protest singer during the Soviet era, these words point to the deep cultural and familial connection between Russia and its emigrants living in Israel.
For the British media, the Russian use of the line was more than a hint. The British tabloids adopted this conspiracy theory and took it as irrefutable proof of what would happen in the game.
They expected the Israeli national team, for which last night's match was effectively meaningless because it had already been eliminated in Euro 2008 qualifiers, would not make an effort, thus helping Russia win and qualify for the finals at the expense of the English team. But the conspiracy theory shared by the media in both countries proved to be wrong, and Vysotsky's song will have to wait for another chance to come true. Israel won 2-1.

By: emptywheel Thursday February 21, 2008 9:16 am John McCain denies any honor was stolenneither his nor Ms. Iseman's. Or rather, he denies "the story," though it's not clear whether he's denying that his relationship with Iseman was inappropriate or that he did favors for her. So I guess I'll leave it up to you to decide whether she stole McCain's honor in both the 2000 and 2008 presidential elections. For the moment, though, I'm more interested in the 2004 electionthe one McCain didn't run in. You see, I find it a mighty curious coincidence that two of the companies for which Iseman was lobbying John McCain in 1999 and 2000the time of their potentially inappropriate relationshipalso happen to be the two television companies that championed the Kerry smear, "Stolen Honor," in 2004. Stolen Honor Stolen Honor , you'll recall, was a 45-long propaganda piece, repeating the allegations the Swift Boaters made against John Kerry. It came out in September 2004 (as Republicans have promised a smear against Hillary or Obama will come out at precisely the same time this cycle). Shortly thereafter, Sinclair Broadcasting ordered its stations to pre-empt normal broadcasting to play the "documentary." Sinclair also fired one employee who complained about the order. After a blogswarm in response, Sinclair's advertisers started pulling their advertising, which eventually led Sinclair to cut back its plans for the "documentary,"

Last week, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved commercial broadband Internet service over electric power lines. A couple years ago, I wrote a whole column about this topic for Inc. , (it's among this week's links) and not much has changed from a technical standpoint, but the news is so important and that column was so long ago that I think a few points bear repeating, the most significant being that broadband over power lines (BPL) is going to totally shake up the Internet industry. There's a new sheriff in town. You might wonder why BPL even matters since we already have cable modems and DSL, and in some places, wireless broadband? It matters because none of those is reliable enough or cheap enough, and I blame that on inadequate competition. Heck, I have BOTH DSL and a cable modem, and there are times when my service has still faltered. The entry of a major new player can only help to improve the quality of service from incumbent providers. At least that's my hope.

05 Mar 2008 10:18 am My sense of things had been that, demographically speaking, Pennsylvania was like Ohio but I thought I might look up the actual census data to see what we can see. Basically, Pennsylvania is like Ohio. The differences more old people, fewer black people, more Hispanics mostly cut in Clinton's favor, with only the larger number of college graduates helping Obama. The bad news for Obama, basically, is that he needs to fight a big, protracted battle in a state that's very demographically unfavorable to him. The good news for Obama is that given how Clinton-friendly the state and, and the fact that Clinton can't overtake him in the delegate lead anyway, if he does manage to beat her here she'll have no excuses left to stay in the race. Digital Cable and Satellite DRM Harms TV Fans and Innovators
Download a PDF of this paper It's the latest digital media murder mystery: TiVo Series2's TiVoToGo enabled limited portability of recorded content to PCs and other devices, but the TiVo Series3 HD did not include this feature when recently released. In other words, if you want to upgrade to HD, you have to downgrade your TiVo's features. You don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to guess that this story somehow involves Hollywood, the FCC, and "digital rights management" (DRM) restrictions. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has opposed these restrictions every step of the way, and, in this article, we'll explain digital cable DRM's sordid history, how digital cable and satellite DRM may affect you, and what you can do to fight back. In short, get ready for copying limits on cable and satellite content that won't stop "Internet piracy" but will stop you from making legitimate use of lawfully acquired content. You'll be forced to only buy devices with limited features, and restricted digital outputs could break compatibility with your current HD displays and receivers, even though you may have already invested thousands of dollars in them. Innovators will have to beg permission before inventing new digital devices that help you get more from your satellite and cable content. Unfortunately, TiVoToGo's disappearance is just the tip of the iceberg.

Don't lose any opportunity, however small, of being gentle toward everyone. Don't rely on your own efforts to succeed in your various undertakings, but only on God's help. Then rest in his care of you, confident that he will do what is best for you, provided that you will, for your part, work diligently but gently. I say "gently" because a tense diligence is harmful both to our heart and to our task and is not really diligence, but rather over eagerness and anxiety...I recommend you to God's mercy.
