1. how can a set on natural numbers be countable, when it is infinite?
2. what is a cardinal number and how does it differ from all other numbers?
3. what are aleph0 and aleph1?

Quote: 1. how can a set on natural numbers be countable, when it is infinite? Its the (most accepted) definition of countable: either a set is finite OR there exists a bijection on N. So this may force you to abandon your old ideas of what countability means (in the colloquial sense). Quote: 3. what are aleph0 and aleph1?

I. The Mirror
The mirror lies in splinters, shattered in the hallway;
the apple lies beside her on the floor.
She barely made tuition; even rent split out eight ways
would mean skipped meals and dirty laundry.
But food and clothes were little thingsthe others helped
they bought her fruit at the downstairs market,
woke her for class, did double loads.
II. Simple Axioms
She used to count the problems out on nights before exams: non-linear equations, formal systems tied up tidy but now she counted empty sets, and ashes on the floor. Gödel’s theorem taught her mathematics was no refuge. Uncertainties of life were found as much in simple axioms as late semester nights of study with the man who’d left for London and the child in her belly he would never claim. III. One Hand Free

Continuum hypothesis
fluid mechanics In mathematics , the continuum hypothesis (CH for short) is a hypothesis , advanced by Georg Cantor , about the possible sizes of infinite sets . Cantor introduced the concept of cardinality to compare the sizes of infinite sets, and he showed that the set of integers is strictly smaller than the set of real numbers . The continuum hypothesis states the following:
There is no set whose size is strictly between that of the integers and that of the real numbers.
Or mathematically speaking, noting that the cardinality for the integers is aleph-null ") and the cardinality of the real numbers is , the continuum hypothesis says that there is no set Failed to parse (Missing texvc executable; please see math/README to configure.): S for which
This is equivalent to:
The real numbers have also been called the continuum , hence the name. There is also a generalization of the continuum hypothesis called the generalized continuum hypothesis (GCH) saying:
For all ordinals

To state the hypothesis formally, we need a definition: we say that two sets

Re: I believe in a supreme being

I believe in a supreme being now, but I do not necessarily think that he
is always benevolent. I think he may have a life of his own.
What is the problem with beings existing that are superior to our makeup?
Many species on this planet have characteristics that are superior to us.
What is the problem with the concept of an alpha male above all beings?
Many people would say that an alpha male is sufficient power to justify
the term God.
The problem I see is that many people are not willing to conceive an
omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent being. This kind of alpha male
implies an eternal authority. Not necessarily an anal authority, but an authority, and some people apparently have a distaste for that. The current models of the building blocks of reality are either point particles, or strings with one dimension being that of a point, within a continuum (the real number line of some number of dimensions in spacetime). We are not finite. Any mass besides a point particles spans an aleph-null infinity within the aleph-one continuums of reality

Pages : rahuldandekar 06-November-2006, 12:23 AM Mister Earl, you seem to have the same misconception as many other "doubters": namely, that the notation 0.99~ (or 0.99... or 0.99R) represents a process. It doesn't. It represents a number, one with an infinite number of 9s to the right of the decimal.
Why don't people get this even after 50 pages The topic has not "wandered" much even after 50 pages, we're still there, trying to explain the same thing over and over again.
Reminds me of :wall:. Moose 06-November-2006, 01:45 AM Why don't people get this even after 50 pages
38, but it's because people are intrinsically lazy. Unfortunately, we're becomming an instant gratification society. Not wanting to take the time to do the appropriate research needed to justify our instincts.
Unfortunately, a person's first instinct is that 0.999~ cannot possibly be equal to 1, for the various misconceptions we've seen so often in this thread.
The fact of it is, 0.999~ is, and indeed must be equal to 1. The math bears it out, physics bears it out. Engineering bears it out. So does Computer Science. I can say that because engineering works. We can build bridges. We can make computer chips. We can launch rockets.
