Every even integer greater than 2 can be written as the sum of two primes
Expressing a given even number as a sum of two primes is called a Goldbach partition of the number. For example, In other words, the Goldbach conjecture states that every even number greater than or equal to four is a Goldbach number , a number that can be expressed as the sum of two primes. On 7 June , the Prussian mathematician Christian Goldbach wrote a letter to Leonhard Euler (letter XLIII) in which he proposed the following conjecture:
Every integer greater than 2 can be written as the sum of three primes.
He considered 1 to be a prime number , a convention subsequently abandoned. A modern version of Goldbach's original conjecture is:
Every integer greater than 5 can be written as the sum of three primes
Euler, becoming interested in the problem, replied by noting that this conjecture is equivalent with another version:

Origins
In , the Prussian mathematician Christian Goldbach wrote a letter to Leonhard Euler in which he proposed the following conjecture:
Every integer greater than 2 can be written as the sum of three primes.
He considered 1 to be a prime number , a convention subsequently abandoned. So today, Goldbach's original conjecture would be written:
Every integer greater than 5 can be written as the sum of three primes.
Euler, becoming interested in the problem, answered with an equivalent version of the conjecture:
Every even number greater than 2 can be written as the sum of two primes.
The former conjecture is today known as the "ternary" Goldbach conjecture, the latter as the "strong" Goldbach conjecture. The conjecture that all odd numbers greater than 9 are the sum of three odd primes is called the "weak" Goldbach conjecture. Both questions have remained unsolved ever since, although the weak form of the conjecture is much closer to resolution than the strong one.

x (Even(x) x 2) ( p q Prime(p) Prime(q) x = p+q). Note the truth value of this statement is currently unknown. See Goldbach s_conjecture
http://pine.cs.yale.edu/pinewiki/PredicateLogic
PineWiki Search: Using only PropositionalLogic , we can express a simple version of a famous argument:
  • Socrates is a man. If Socrates is a man, then Socrates is mortal. Therefore, Socrates is mortal.
This is an application of the inference rule (see InferenceRules ) called modus ponens , which says that from p and p ⇒ q you can deduce q. The first two statements are axioms (meaning we are given them as true without proof), and the last is the conclusion of the argument. What if we encounter Socrates's infinitely more logical cousin Spocrates? We'd like to argue
  • Spocrates is a man. If Spocrates is a man, then Spocrates is mortal. Therefore, Spocrates is mortal.
Unfortunately, the second step depends on knowing that humanity implies mortality for everybody, not just Socrates. If we are unlucky in our choice of axioms, we may not know this. What we would like is a general way to say that humanity implies mortality for everybody, but with just PropositionalLogic , we can't write this fact down.
