The Iron Hypothesis (Excerpted from an article by Caroline Dopyera, Earth magazine, October 1996) John Martin's iron hypothesis—fertilizing the sea with iron—was first put to the test on the open ocean in 1993. According to Martin's iron hypothesis, seeding the ocean surface with iron should make microscopic marine organisms like diatoms multiply dramatically, which might in turn cool the planet. The big question is: Should this type of "global engineering" be done? The research vessel Columbus Iselin was still a ways off when Ken Johnson saw it pass through the Panama Canal and chug toward him. He tensed with a feeling of desperation. The ship was supposed to carry the ocean experiment of the decade, one that could revise textbooks. But to Johnson, the Iselin looked more like a ship that would take the Beverly Hillbillies to sea than a sophisticated research vessel. A portable laboratory and huge plastic tanks were lashed to the deck. A crane towered near the ship's center. Barrels of blue-green iron granules crammed the ship. For six weeks, 23 of the world's top ocean scientists would work in a lab the size of a subway car. It was an enormous mission for such a small ship. How are we going to do this?

Edward O. Wilson's Biophilia Hypothesis
A somewhat controversial hypothesis put forward by Edward Wilson is the idea that humans evolved as creatures deeply enmeshed with the intricacies of nature, and that we still have this affinity with nature ingrained in our genotype.
  • Edward O. Wilson, a Harvard University entomologist, coined the term "biophilia", referring to humans' "love of living things" - our innate affinity with nature. Wilson describes biophilia as the "innate tendency to focus on life and lifelike processes." The Biophilia Hypothesis

    Summary
Hypothesis testing refers to the process of choosing between competing hypotheses about a probability distribution, based on observed data from the distribution. It is a core topic in mathematical statistics, and indeed is a fundamental part of the language of statistics. In this chapter, we study the basics of hypothesis testing, and explore hypothesis tests in some of the most important parametric models: the normal model and the Bernoulli model.

The Logia Translation Hypothesis - Brian E. Wilson The Logia Translation Hypothesis (the LTH) is represented in the diagram above. It affirms that many short reports in Aramaic, the Aramaic Logia, were composed by the apostle Matthew during, and soon after the ministry of Jesus. He based some reports on his own eye-witness observation, and some on the testimony of other followers of Jesus. The Aramaic Logia were translated into Greek to form the Greek Logia (or "Greek Notes"). The translator of the Aramaic Logia to some extent edited the material he translated. Each short report was written in lively Greek and was a self-contained piece of material suitable for teaching Jesus tradition to Greek-speaking Christians. Each synoptist independently selected and edited material from the Greek Logia to form his own continuous book of Jesus tradition in Greek, that is, his own gospel. The LTH therefore entails that virtually all the contents of the synoptic gospels were derived from the Greek Logia, and that the Greek Logia together formed a document that was larger than any synoptic gospel. It also entails that the apostle Matthew used the testimony of Jesus and his followers, including his mother and brothers after the resurrection (see Ac 1.13-14 and I Cor 15.5-7.), and that there was a continuous documentary transmission of Jesus tradition from the time of the ministry of Jesus through to the writing of the synoptic gospels.

A study published this week in PLoS Medicine explores the developmental overnutrition hypothesis in British mothers. This is the hypothesis that if a mother is overweight during pregnancy, high sugar and fat levels in her body might permanently affect her growing baby's appetite control and metabolism, and so her offspring might be at risk of becoming obese in later life.
Debbie Lawlor (of the University of Bristol) and colleagues used two approaches to test the developmental overnutrition hypothesis in a cohort of British mothers. Firstly they asked whether offspring fat mass is more strongly related to maternal body mass index (BMI) than to paternal BMI - if the hypothesis is true this should be the case. Secondly, they asked whether a genetic indicator of maternal fatness-the ''A'' variant of the FTO gene-is related to offspring fat mass.

    The Two Source Hypothesis
    Abstract
Mark was a source for Matthew and Luke, both of whom also independently used a now lost sayings source called Q.
    Overview
The Two Source Hypothesis ( ) has been the predominant source theory for the synoptic problem for almost a century and half. Originally conceived in Germany by Ch. H. Weisse in 1838, the came to dominate German protestant scholarship after the fall of the Tübingen school with H. J. Holtzmann's endorsement of a related variant in 1863. In the latter part of the 19th century, the Oxford School brought the to English scholarship, culminating in B. H. Streeter's 1924 treatment of the synoptic problem. Now, the commands the support of most biblical critics from all continents and denominations. The derives its name from its postulation of two main sources for the synoptic gospels: a narrative source for the triple tradition and a sayings source for the double tradition. The triple tradition comprises the subject matter jointly related by Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Generally, the triple tradition is characterized by substantial agreements in arrangement and wording among all three gospels with frequent agreements between Mark and Matthew against Luke and between Mark and Luke against Matthew, but a near absence of agreements of Matthew and Luke against Mark. =0.4+0.3*2(n-2) Where It Began – the Titius-Bode Law of Planetary Spacing In the latter half of the 18 th century, when only six major planets were known, interest was attracted to the regularity of the spacing of their orbits from the Sun. The table shows the Titius-Bode law of planetary spacing, comparing actual and formula values. This in turn drew attention to the large gap between Mars and Jupiter, apparently just large enough for one additional planet. Today we know of tens of thousands of “minor planets” or asteroids with planet-like orbits at that average mean distance from the Sun. With the discovery of the second asteroid in 1802, Olbers proposed that many more asteroids would be found because the planet that belonged at that distance must have exploded. This marked the birth of the exploded planet hypothesis. It seemed the most reasonable explanation until 1814, when Lagrange found that the highly elongated orbits of comets could also be readily explained by such a planetary explosion. That, unfortunately, challenged the prevailing theory of cometary origins of the times, the Laplacian primeval solar nebula hypothesis. Comets were supposed to be primitive bodies left over from the solar nebula in the outer solar system. This challenge incited Laplace supporters to attack the exploded planet hypothesis. Lagrange died in the same year, and support for his viewpoint died with him when no one else was willing to step into the line of fire.

    Hypothesis Test
Setting up and testing hypotheses is an essential part of statistical inference. In order to formulate such a test, usually some theory has been put forward, either because it is believed to be true or because it is to be used as a basis for argument, but has not been proved, for example, claiming that a new drug is better than the current drug for treatment of the same symptoms. In each problem considered, the question of interest is simplified into two competing claims / hypotheses between which we have a choice; the null hypothesis, denoted H , against the alternative hypothesis, denoted H . These two competing claims / hypotheses are not however treated on an equal basis: special consideration is given to the null hypothesis. We have two common situations:
  • The experiment has been carried out in an attempt to disprove or reject a particular hypothesis, the null hypothesis, thus we give that one priority so it cannot be rejected unless the evidence against it is sufficiently strong. For example,
H : there is no difference in taste between coke and diet coke
    against
    H : there is a difference.

    The Development Hypothesis (1852)
    Herbert Spencer
This early essay of Spencer's was originally published anonymously in The Leader for March 20 1852. It was the second contribution in a regular series entitled "The Haythorne Papers". Spencer's identity was revealed some while after. It is reproduced in Herbert Spencer, Williams and Norgate (3 vols 1891) pp.1-7]; and here in full. The Leader of 20 March 1852 in one crucial phrase: "Those who cavalierly reject the Theory of Evolution ..." originally read "Those who cavalierly reject the Theory of Lamarck ..." [emphasis added].' Text prepared by David Clifford, Ph.D., Cambridge University. In a debate upon the development hypothesis, lately narrated to me by a friend, one of the disputants was described as arguing that as, in all our experience, we know no such phenomenon as transmutation of species, it is unphilosophical to assume that transmutation of species ever takes place. Had I been present I think that passing over his assertion, which is open to criticism, I should have replied that as in all our experience we have never known a species created, it was, by his own showing, unphilosophical to assume that any species ever had been created. Should the believers in special creations consider it unfair thus to call upon them to describe how special creations take place, I reply that this is far less than they demand from the supporters of the Development Hypothesis. They are merely asked to point out a conceivable mode. On the other hand, they ask, not simply for a conceivable mode, but for the actual mode. They do not say - Show us how this may take place; but they say - Show us how this does take place. So far from its being unreasonable to put the above question, it would be reasonable to ask not only for a possible mode of special creation, but for an ascertained mode; seeing that this is no greater a demand than they make upon their opponents.

"Darwin chased God out of his old haunts in biology, and he scurried for safety down the rabbit hole of physics. The laws and constants of the universe, we were told, are too good to be true: a setup, carefully tuned to allow the eventual evolution of life. It needed a good physicist to show us the fallacy, and Victor Stenger lucidly does so. The faithful won't change their minds, of course (that is what faith means), but Victor Stenger drives a pack of energetic ferrets down the last major bolt hole and God is running out of refuges in which to hide. I learned an enormous amount from this splendid book."

“Marshalling converging arguments from physics, astronomy, biology, and philosophy, Stenger has delivered a masterful blow in defense of reason.
God: The Failed Hypothesis is a potent, readable, and well-timed assault upon religious delusion. It should be widely read."

    http://www.indiana.edu/~curtweb/Research/Red_Queen hyp.html
Red Queen Hypothesis. The "Red Queen" hypothesis is used to describe two similar ideas, which are both based on coevolution. The original idea is that coevolution could lead to situations for which the probability of extinction is relatively constant over millions of years (Van Valen 1973). The gist of the idea is that, in tightly coevolved interactions, evolutionary change by one species (e.g., a prey or host) could lead to extinction of other species (e.g. a predator or parasite), and that the probability of such changes might be reasonably independent of species age. Van Valen named the idea "the Red Queen hypothesis," because, under this view, species had to "run" (evolve) in order to stay in the same place (extant). ( Show me the data. The other idea is that coevolution, particularly between hosts and parasites, could lead to sustained oscillations in genotype frequencies (Fig. 1). This idea forms the core for one of the leading hypotheses for the persistence of sexual reproduction see Bell 1982). In species where asexual reproduction is possible (as in many plants and invertebrates), coevolutionary interactions with parasites may select for sexual reproduction in hosts as a way to reduce the risk of infection in offspring. There have been many important contributors to the Red Queen hypothesis as it applies to sex. W.D. Hamilton and John Jaenike were among the earliest pioneers of the idea. Figure 1.

Then they tipped their precious cargo into the wild Southern Ocean! These modern-day scientist adventurers must have had a good reason. They did – they wanted to test the iron (Fe) hypothesis.

    What is the Fe hypothesis?
The Fe hypothesis suggests that: (i) the concentration of dissolved Fe limits phytoplankton (plant plankton) growth and biomass in a large proportion of the nutrient-rich regions of the world’s oceans including the Southern Ocean; and (ii) an increased Fe concentration in the Southern Ocean in the last glacial maximum resulted in increased movement of carbon into the deep ocean. This hypothesis was first proposed by John Martin of the Moss Landing Laboratory in the USA in the late 1980s, after the development of technology which enabled the measurement of CO

Moreover, Alzheimer's changes in neurochemistry of amyloid b , tau, neuronal cytoskeleton, and oxidative stress reactions represent physiological transitory mechanisms aiming to compensate impaired brain cholesterol dynamics and/or associated neurotransmission and synaptic plasticity failure.
