    Mukasey's Paradox
By Paul Kiel - March 4, 2008, 6:17PM Jonathan Turley, professor of law at George Washington, writing today in The Los Angeles Times The recent decisions of Atty. Gen. Michael B. Mukasey to block any prosecution of Bush administration officials for contempt and to block any criminal investigation of torture led to a chorus of criticism. Many view the decisions as raw examples of political manipulation of the legal process and overt cronyism. I must confess that I was one of those crying foul until I suddenly realized that there was something profound, even beautiful, in Mukasey's action. In his twisting of legal principles, the attorney general has succeeded in creating a perfect paradox. Under Mukasey's Paradox, lawyers cannot commit crimes when they act under the orders of a president and a president cannot commit a crime when he acts under advice of lawyers.... When reduced to its purest form, Mukasey's Paradox is that government officials cannot violate the law but that because executive privilege is also a law, it's sometimes necessary to violate the law in order to uphold the law.

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Paradox

A paradox first enunciated by Einstein et al. (1935), who proposed a thought experiment that appeared to demonstrate quantum mechanics to be an incomplete theory. The usual view of quantum mechanics says that a wave function determines the probabilities of an actual experimental result and that it is the most complete possible specification of the quantum state. Einstein et al. believed the predictions of quantum mechanics to be correct, but only as the result of statistical distributions of other unknown but real properties of the particles. Bohm (1951) presented a paper in which he described a modified form of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen thought experiment which he believed to be conceptually equivalent to that suggested by Einstein et al. (1935), but which was easier to treat mathematically. Bohm suggested using two atoms with a known total spin of zero, separated in a way that the spin of each atom points in a direction exactly opposite to that of the other. In this situation, the angular momentum of one particle can be measured indirectly by measuring the corresponding vector of the other particle. Bell (1964) subsequently formulated Bell's inequalities , which seemed to be a physically reasonable condition of locality which imposed restrictions on the maximum correlations of the measurements of a pair of spin 1/2 particles formed somehow in the singlet state and moving freely in opposite directions. This inequality can be tested in a laboratory experiment because the statistical predictions of quantum mechanics are incompatible with any local

Divine Paradox We live in a world of paradox, where things are seldom as they appear. We witness events or encounter evidence that doesn't make sense, or that seems contradictory, ugly, or painful. As a result, some become jaded realists, while others shut their eyes and escape into a private world of fantasy or despair. A few, however, somehow find a way to remain awake and engaged, and are able to reconcile and even redeem the inevitable contradictions and setbacks of life. Thus, they find a way to experience true peace, happiness, love, beauty and stability.

Paradox Lodge was built in 1899 on Paradox Bay in Lake Placid New York. Paradox Lodge provides a quiet and comfortable atmosphere for guests. Once used as a lodge in the early 50's for summer guests, the building was later abandoned and left vacant for 30 years until the current owners/innkeepers purchased it in April 1998 and began the long and laborious task of renovation. Today, eight rooms are available on a year round basis, each decorated in its own unique style featuring handmade Adirondack furniture, antiques, ceiling fans, beautiful quilts, down comforters, and lots of pillows. The four rooms in the Cedar Lodge have added amenities. Downstairs is a comfortable living room area where guests may lounge and relax before dinner is served. A large covered porch with comfortable rocking chairs is a nice place to watch the setting sun. Or you may prefer to sit down by the lake and enjoy the view of Whiteface Mountain. There are two dining rooms adjacent to the kitchen where breakfast and dinner are served. Dinner reservations are taken on a first come first served basis.

Fermi's Paradox
The galaxy contains roughly a hundred billion stars. If even a very small fraction of these have planets which develop technological civilizations, there must be a very large number of such civilizations. If any of these civilizations produce cultures which colonize over interstellar distances, even at a small fraction of the speed of light, the galaxy should have been completely colonized in no more than a few million years [1]. Since the galaxy is billions of years old, Earth should have been visited and colonized long ago. The absence of any evidence for such visits is the Fermi paradox.

Benniger (1987) describes how mass media has gradually replaced interpersonal communication as a socializing force. Further, social networking sites have become popular sites for youth culture to explore themselves, relationships, and share cultural artifacts [

Welcome to the Home of Tired Light! New. Forum 'Big Bang Blasted'. Out Now! - THE BOOK! "Big Bang Blasted!" The story of the expanding universe and how it was shown to be wrong! On sale at Amazon.com Click logo for Bulletin Board Tired Light is an alternative theory to that of the expanding Universe. This theory explains the experimental evidence without resorting to the 'cosmological constants' or 'vacuum energy' that are essential to the theory of the expanding Universe. Experiment tells us that photons of light from distant galaxies have a longer wavelength on arrival than when they set off. Since red light has a longer wavelength than blue light, we say that they have been 'redshifted'. The Theory of the Expanding Universe explains this as space expanding and stretching the photons as it does so. In Tired Light we say that the photons lost energy during their journey to us by bumping into electrons on the way. The Tired Light Theory (that redshift is due to electron interaction) is supported by the fact that measured values of the Hubble constant, H are exactly equal to a combination of the parameters of the electron. This is known as 'Ashmore's Paradox'. If, in the expanding Universe, the expansion is not related to the electron then why is the Hubble constant found experimentally to be related to the electron?

Explaining The Productivity Paradox
Nobel Prize-winning economist Robert Solow has said that we see computers everywhere except in the productivity statistics. That productivity measures do not seem to show any impact from new computer and information technologies has been labeled the "productivity paradox." Productivity growth has slowed every decade since the 1960s while investments in information technology have grown dramatically. Some take this as proof that information technology doesn't affect productivity. Make no mistake, application of information technology does improve productivity. Since the 1970s, productivity has grown about 1.1 percent per year for sectors that have invested heavily in computers and approximately 0.35 percent for sectors that have invested less heavily. Research by MIT economists shows that in the 1990s computers contribute significantly to firm-level output and productivity. But the effects have been concentrated in a limited number of firms and industries.

77. Web Usage Paradox (Alertbox Aug. 1998)
90% of all websites have poor usability so why do users still use the Web (and like it, too)?
http://www.useit.com/alertbox/980809.html
use it.com Alertbox Aug. 1998 Web usage paradox Jakob Nielsen 's Alertbox for August 9, 1998:
The Web Usage Paradox: Why Do People Use Something This Bad?
The Web is bad; really bad. My estimate is that at least 90% of all commercial websites are overly difficult to use due to problems like:
  • Bloated page design that takes forever to download
  • internally focused design that hypes products without giving any real info about them.
  • Obscure site structures that either have no logic or are based on the company's org.chart.
  • Lack of navigation support, making it very hard to find things when combined with an obscure structure.
  • Narrative writing style optimized for print and linear reading; not for the way users read online (they don't; they scan
As discussed in my previous column on user testing of websites, the average outcome of Web usability studies is that test users fail when they try to perform a test task on the Web. Thus, when you try something new on the Web, the expected outcome is failure Even when the site works, the total user experience often remains miserable . For example, I recently had to buy a new PC and tried to do so through Dell's website, following my own rule that you must live a "Web lifestyle" yourself if you want to be an Internet pundit. The Dell site had some weaknesses, but it was reasonably easy to use and allowed me to order the desired high-end machine. Three days later I received a confirmation email stating that the machine was expected to ship 6 weeks later. This was obviously not satisfactory: when you order on the Internet, Amazon.com has trained users to expect a confirmation email within a few minutes and the product within a few days, unless the website has warned them about shipping delays.

perspective If there were a Productivity Hall of Fame, John Deere would definitely occupy a place of prominence. The 19th century inventor introduced his cutting-edge steel plow with a polished and curved blade in 1837. In the process, he revolutionized agriculture. Tilling an acre of land with a spade required 96 hours and plowing an acre with a yoke of oxen and a crude wooden plow took 24 hours. Deere's steel plow reduced the time to five to eight hours. Fred Smith would also be inducted into the Productivity Hall of Fame. On the night of April 17, 1973, the Yale-educated logistics master sent the first FedEx narrow-body Dassault Falcon jet roaring down the runway at the Memphis airport. From that moment on, packages were delivered more rapidlyabsolutely, positively overnight. Another sure-fire member of our pantheon of productivity would be Andy Grove , the co-founder and former CEO of Intel. Under Grove's leadership, Intel brought out a new generation of microchips that powered the first wave of PCs in the 1980s. Those PCs with Intel inside spelled the demise of typewriters and paper account ledgers, and set the stage for digital time-saving tools like e-mail.

Audio Paradoxes
The best known audio paradox is known as Shepard's paradox. It is the audio equivalent of the endless staircase illusion made famous by M. C. Escher. In this audio paradox a series of tones can be made to sound as if they are ascending or descending in pitch forever. The following graph of Shepard's paradox shows frequency versus time. You can plainly see that the pitch appears to be increasing. Spectrum of Shepard's ascending paradox Note that if the same graph is looped you can see that the finishing pitch is the same as the starting pitch. It may be obvious to the eye, but the ear cannot perceive where the sample starts and finishes. If you listen to this sample the tones will appear to increase in pitch even if the sample loops back to the beginning and starts over. The same spectrum looped three times Two other audio paradoxes are included. One paradox demonstrates that it is possible to make the ear believe a series of tones are decreasing in pitch when they are actually increasing in pitch. The last paradox demonstrates that it is possible to make the ear believe that a tempo is getting quicker when it actually remains constant. The audio samples are provided in MP3 audio format.
