Riemann Hypothesis Proven or Hoax? A June 8 press release from Purdue University announced that one of its professors, Louis De Branges, has proven the Riemann Hypothesis (don't ask me what that is). This isn't just of academic interest because there's a $1 million prize that'll go to the first person who proves it, so the announcement has gotten some media coverage . The press release cautions that the professor's proof hasn't yet been peer-reviewed, but states that De Branges has posted the proof on his web page so that everyone can see it. But the MathWorld site notes that "both the 23-page preprint cited in the release (which is actually from 2003) and a longer preprint from 2004 on de Branges's home page seem to lack an actual proof. Furthermore, a counterexample to de Branges's approach due to Conrey and Li has been known since 1998. The media coverage therefore appears to be much ado about nothing."

Bad Astronomy and Universe Today Forum General Off-Topic Babbling PDA View Full Version : Prime numbers and double primes grav 24-November-2007, 08:09 PM I was reading through this thread (http://www.bautforum.com/general-science/66623-some-questions-concept-random.html) (just started it, though) and it got me thinking about the randomness of primes. I figure there must be some form of pattern for them, even if we can't directly see it. The way I figure, if we start with all integers and subtract those that aren't primes, then we would be left with numbers that fall into the sets of
etc
which basically just rids us of all forms of 2n, 3n, 4n, etc, so that all of the primes that are left should be equal to a number in each of the sets above, up to the value of the integer we are finding for. Well, anyway, I started working through that and realized that the set 6n +/- 1 is the only one that can be used for the set for 6, since 6n +/- 2 and 6n +/- 4 will each give a number divisible by 2, and 6n +/- 3 will give a number divisible by 3, and 6n +/- 5 is the same as 6n +/- 1 for a higher or lower value of n (both of which are also true for the set for 4 above).
Since all primes must match a number in every set, then this means that all primes greater than 3 must be of the form 6n +/- 1. All double primes, then, which are separated from each other by two, must be of the form 6n - 1, 6n + 1. Is this known? I've looked around some but haven't found it. I'm sure it is but I'll ask anyway. :) I've just started working on this but I'm wondering what else might be determined by such sets. Any suggestions?

For example, 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13 and 17 are all prime numbers. Aside from their theoretical interest, large prime numbers have become increasingly important in day to day life since they underpin the cryptography that allows secure transactions to take place on the internet (such as encrypting your credit card details when you buy online).
While there are standard techniques to discover new primes, and more importantly, check whether a number really is a prime, mathematicians have not been able to discover if there is any order to the way in which primes are distributed. However, the German mathematician G.F.G. Riemann (1826-1866) noticed that the frequency of primes is highly related to the Zeta Function, now known as the Riemann Zeta Function.
[EQUATION]
The Riemann Hypothesis is that "The real part of any non-trivial zero of the Riemann Zeta Function is 1/2." It sounds complicated (and it is!) but a lot rests on whether his hypothesis is true. There are many equations in abstract mathematics that have been solved on the assumption that the hypothesis is trueand if it isn't, then not only would we have to look at those equations again, but it would aso imply that there is a certain order to primes.

Dan Rockmore, « Stalking the Riemann Hypothesis: The Quest to Find the Hidden Law » In 1859 a German professor named Bernhard Riemann postulated a law capable of describing with an amazing degree of accuracy the baffling occurrence of prime numbers; coming up with its proof has been the holy grail of mathematicians ever since. In Stalking the Riemann Hypothesis, Dan Rockmore, a prominent mathematician in his own right, takes us from Euclid's pondering of the infinitude of the primes through modern efforts to prove the Riemann hypothesis–efforts that astonishingly connect the primes to the statistics of solitaire, chaos theory, and even the mysteries of quantum mechanics. Along the way, he introduces us to the many brilliant and fascinating thinkers who have contributed to this work, from the most famous mathematician of all time, Carl Friedrich Gauss (Riemann's teacher), to the intellectual giants David Hilbert and Freeman Dyson. A lively, comprehensive, and accessible examination of one of the most compelling unsolved problems in mathematics, Stalking the Riemann Hypothesis tells us the full story of the quest to find that elusive solution.

Riemann hypothesis
Fnd The Riemann hypothesis , first formulated by Bernhard Riemann in 1859, is a conjecture about the distribution of the zeros of Riemann's zeta function . It is one of the most important open problems of contemporary mathematics ; a $1,000,000 prize has been offered by the Clay Mathematics Institute for its resolution. Most mathematicians believe the Riemann hypothesis to be true. The Riemann zeta function ζ( s ) is defined for all complex numbers s ≠1. It has certain so-called "trivial" zeros for s s s = -6, ... The Riemann hypothesis is concerned with the non-trivial zeros:
The real part of any non-trivial zero of the Riemann zeta function is 1/2.
Thus the non-trivial zeros should lie on the so-called critical line it with t a real number and i the imaginary unit This traditional formulation however obscures somewhat the true importance of the conjecture. The zeta function has a deep connection to the distribution of prime numbers and von Koch proved in 1901 that the Riemann hypothesis is equivalent to the following considerable strengthening of the prime number theorem x x ) = ∫ 1/ln( x ) d x + O( x ln x ) for x Here, π(
