Closed For a town that is landlocked, Austin has more than its share of good Sushi restaurants. The subject of this week's review is Midori Sushi on 183 near Anderson. Proprietor David Cho has crafted a very elegant and tasty little restaurant. The wait staff is very personable and enthusiastic, the environment cozy and comforting, and the food just rocks. Everything they do at Midori Sushi takes on a personal hue which leads to lots of loyal and regular customers. In fact, each time I've gone there, I've seen some of the same people. The entrees are no less intriguing. The sushi is fresh and of excellent quality. I've tried the maguro [tuna] and the hamachi [yellowtail]. You must also sample their Udon soup. The San Kai Udon is my favorite because it's filled with sea food, those wonderful thick udon noodles [these rate very high on the "slurpability" scale] and of course the wonderful, rich broth that forms the basis for all Udon soups.
The Shrimp tempura is also a treat. Cooked perfectly, the batter is crisp and very tasty. Not at all soggy as can sometimes be the case.

I swear Monifah's "Touch It" has a very similar feel to this song (I think it's the beat) and the video reminds me of something Aaliyah would have been in. Dear Doug, I have enjoyed keeping this blog over the last two weeks. In addition to my concerts and other activities here in Asia, the blog gave me the opportunity to share my thoughts and feelings about these experiences with you and our readers. As is often the case, the impact of these experiences is likely to manifest itself in my future endeavors. I particularly enjoyed thinking about different ways to form strong partnerships among the relevant parties in concert presentation the audience, presenters, and performers. Whether in the East or in the West, I continue to explore ways of keeping music alive and vivid through different presentation methods. The young violinists in Singapore, the arts management students in Japan, and all the other young people I have encountered in the last two weeks will keep energizing and motivating my future activities. I look forward to continuing our dialogue informally and to hearing from our readers how they think we can better achieve a more active and involved audience/presenter/artist axis. With best wishes

Posted in: addthis_url = location.href; addthis_title = document.title; addthis_pub = 'erku'; For Midori – subject of the London Symphony Orchestra’s 2008 Artist Portrait – music is about more than being one of the world’s great violinists. Born in Japan in 1971 and an international concerto soloist since the age of eleven, Midori is passionate about sharing her music with as many people as she can. The LSO’s Artist Portrait series sees Midori in many different lights this spring, including eight different events with the London Symphony Orchestra and LSO Discovery. Midori will be performing two Barbican concerts with the LSO – the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto on 3 April and the Britten Violin Concerto on 6 April 2008; and two chamber recitals at LSO St Luke’s. The chamber recitals with pianist Charles Abramovic will take place on 6 March and 8 May 2008, exploring repertoire by CPE Bach, Schnittke, Beethoven, Shostakovich, MacMillan, Penderecki, John Adams and a world premiere by Christian Mason.

Midori Celebrates Schnittke and Takemitsu By Dennis D. Rooney 26 Jan 2008 Midori showcases two distinctive contemporaries in three Lincoln Center concerts, the first of which takes place on February 13. In the midst of her 25th anniversary season, violinist Midori comes to Lincoln Center in 2008 with three unusual concerts, all featuring the music of two important composers who flourished in the final decades of the last century, Alfred Schnittke and Toru Takemitsu. Her Lincoln Center series is part of a schedule that includes more than 90 concerts in Europe and Asia during her 25th season of public performance. Midori photo by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders The work of Schnittke and Takemitsu brought each composer worldwide distinction, yet neither has become truly popular. Midori hopes to bring their distinctive musical voices to a wider audience by combining their works with familiar repertoire staples on each program, all to be performed in the Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The first and second concerts will feature pre-concert talks. Midori will speak before the first with Peter Grilli, Executive Director of the Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture at Columbia University in New York. A longtime friend of Takemitsu, Grilli was the composer's personal representative in the United States. Laurel E. Fay, a musicologist, writer and scholar of Russian music, will lecture before the second concert.

    60. Midnight Eye Feature: Forgotten Fragments: An Introduction To Japanese Silent Ci
I was recently lucky enough to catch one such of these delivered by midori Sawato in Tokyo, accompanying two films from Nikkatsu s early Mito Komon series
    http://www.midnighteye.com/features/silentfilm_pt2.shtml
var type_date="feature_07162002"; document.write(""); The general consensus abroad seems to be that Japanese cinema really only began in earnest during the 50s, when films such as Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon (1950), Kimisaburo Yoshimura's A Tale of Genji ("Genji Monogatari", 1952), Kenji Mizoguchi's Ugetsu ("Ugetsu Monogatari", 1953), and Teinosuke Kinugasa's Gate of Hell (Jigokumon, 1953) were first unveiled to a wider world. In reality, the Japanese film industry began pretty shortly after the new medium was born at the tail-end of the 19th century, yet still hardly anything has been written outside of Japan on the subject of pre-War Japanese cinema (an obvious exception being Anderson and Richie's The Japanese Film : Art and Industry, published in 1959). That any films do remain from this period is largely down to the work of one man, Shunsui Matsuda. Born in 1925, Matsuda began his vocation working as a child benshi. In 1947, when post-War shortages meant there really weren't a lot of films being shown in the more provincial areas of Japan, he found himself part of a troupe of itinerant benshi travelling around Kyushu, whose burgeoning coal mining industry had attracted a lot of workers to the region. The desperate shortage of any means of entertainment in the area meant that reruns of old silent films were still immensely popular. The story goes that Matsuda discovered one of the projectionists snipping out footage from one of these films because it "dragged the film down", and thereupon decided to dedicate his life to the act of preserving these early cinematic documents.
