   Extractions: Jump to: navigation search The term ecotoxicology was coined by Truhaut in 1969, who defined it as "the branch of toxicology concerned with the study of toxic effects, caused by natural or synthetic pollutants, to the constituents of ecosystems , animal (including human), vegetable and microbial, in an integral context” (Truhaut, 1977). Ecotoxicology is alleged to be the integration of toxicology and ecology or, as Chapman (2002) suggested, “ecology in the presence of toxicants”. It aims to predict the effects upon natural populations, communities, or ecosystems - ‘the ecosystem’- of stressors, be they anthropogenic in origin or otherwise. It differs from Environmental Toxicology The publication in 1962 of Rachel Carson 's seminal volume, Silent Spring catalysed the separation of environmental toxicology - and, subsequently, ecotoxicology - from classical toxicology. The revolutionary element in Carson's work was her extrapolation from single-organism effects to effects at the whole ecosystem and the "balance of nature" (Bazerman et al, 2006). This systemic study is distinct from the anthropocentric nature of classical toxicology and ecotoxicology is, therefore, a far broader discipline incorporating aspects of ecology toxicology physiology molecular biology ... analytical chemistry and a wealth of other disciplines to study the effects of xenobiotics in an ecosystem . The ultimate goal of this approach is to be able to predict the effects of pollution so that, should a pollution incident occur, the most efficient and effective action to remediate the detrimental effects can be identified. In those ecosystems that are already impacted by pollution ecotoxicological studies can inform as to the best course of action to restore ecosystem services and functions efficiently and effectively.

Stehr, Carla M The core mission of the Ecotoxicology and Environmental Fish Health Program is to determine the impacts of human activities on the health of wild fish, especially Pacific salmon and marine fish. To do this, the program has five research teams, four of which focus on different aspects of fish physiology and biology, and one of which focuses on assessing risks posed to fish health by human activities, especially the releases of chemical contaminants into freshwater, estuarine, and marine waters. While the primary expertise of the Program is in ecotoxicology, there is substantial effort made to assess the normal physiology of wild fish, and natural variations in response to non-anthropogenic factors, as a backdrop against which human activities, such as the release of toxic chemicals, can be assessed. In addition to determining the effects of toxic contaminants on fish health, an important part of our research also examines the recovery of fish health after remedial activities are undertaken to clean up contaminated sites. This important line of research allows us to determine the efficacy of cleanup operations, and better determine the accuracy of our models which predict risk to our living aquatic resources.

It is useful for modeling species with complex life histories or other biologies in which stage membership (rather than age) determines the demographic characteristics of an individual. RAMAS Stage comes with templates for species from many taxa (such as mammals, insects, fish, birds and plants) which are easy to customize. RAMAS Stage allows a model to include environmental factors which vary through time, and it yields summaries of the expected abundance of stages and the uncertainty of those expectations. It also estimates the risks that an abundance will fall below, or grow above, any threshold. General life histories. Simple models can be based on developmental stage. These include widely used transition matrix models such as Leslie or Lefkovitch formulations. More complicated models can be constructed to represent more complex life histories that may include multidimensional structure (for example age and size simultaneously) and linear or nonlinear transitions.
