In electronics noise can refer to the electronic signal corresponding to acoustic noise (in an audio system) or the electronic signal corresponding to the (visual) noise commonly seen as ' snow ' on a degraded television or video image. In signal processing or computing it can be considered data without meaning; that is, data that is not being used to transmit a signal , but is simply produced as an unwanted by-product of other activities. In Information Theory , however, noise is still considered to be information . In a broader sense, film grain or even advertisements in web pages can be considered noise. Noise can block, distort, or change the meaning of a message in both human and electronic communication. In many of these areas, the special case of thermal noise arises, which sets a fundamental lower limit to what can be measured or signaled and is related to basic physical processes at the molecular level described by well known simple formulae. Extractions: By Vincent Bockaert Each pixel in a camera sensor contains one or more light sensitive photodiodes which convert the incoming light (photons) into an electrical signal which is processed into the color value of the pixel in the final image. If the same pixel would be exposed several times by the same amount of light, the resulting color values would not be identical but have small statistical variations, called "noise". Even without incoming light, the electrical activity of the sensor itself will generate some signal, the equivalent of the background hiss of audio equipment which is switched on without playing any music. This additional signal is "noisy" because it varies per pixel (and over time) and increases with the temperature, and will add to the overall image noise. It is called the "noise floor". The output of a pixel has to be larger than the noise floor in order to be significant (i.e. to be distinguishable from noise). Noise in digital images is most visible in uniform surfaces (such as blue skies and shadows) as monochromatic grain, similar to film grain (luminance noise) and/or as colored waves (color noise). Mild noise can be annoying; excessive noise can destroy a person's hearing. People do not easily become accustomed to noise. The slightest unwanted sound can become very annoying if it continues for any length of time. While the continuous hum of a busy freeway may be ignored by some nearby residents, others will never be able to ignore it and increasingly will find it irritating. The visible part of the ears are sound gathering scoops that guide sound waves along a one-inch canal which acts as a resonating chamber. When they reach the eardrum, they become vibrations. These vibrations are picked up in the middle ear by three tiny linked ear bones and are mechanically passed deeper to the inner ear where hair cells translate them into electrochemical impulses. The auditory part of the brain interprets this stimulus and decides how far away it is, where it is, and what it is. Sound is the result of waves compressed atmospheric particles traveling through the air. The waves are created when atmospheric particles alternately are squeezed closer together than normal, then pulled farther apart than normal. Sound waves move outward from the vibrating source and weaken as they travel. They may be reflected or bent by obstacles so the sound that reaches the ear may be different from the sound that was originally generated.
