Extractions: History Extreme Noise began as an idea in the winter of 1993-94. A group of local scenesters were fed up with the lack of a punk record store in this punkest of punk towns. Local independent record stores carried some punk but not enough. Several local labels and distributors had been selling records at gigs, by mail, at record conventions and a few punk record swaps had been organized. Although each element of the scene would have been unable to support a store of its own, by joining together it was felt a store could serve the whole punk scene in the spirit of unity. Read more... Dial a number on your in-game virtual cellphone and you'll receive a text message with artist and title information and, if you've signed up to be part of Rockstar's upcoming social network, you'll get a real-world e-mail with a link to buy the song on Amazon.com. All songs are DRM-free MP3s, so you could play them on any device, including your Xbox 360 or PS3outside the confines of the game. May we suggest Texas apocalyptic-guitar instrumental band Explosions In The Sky for this scene? We'd chalk this up to actual maintenance, but since it is officially Tuesday on the US East Coast, we'll give it the new-product benefit of the doubt. Some items, including Airport Express units and the Mac Mini , have been reported in limited availability mode for a while, so it's possible that we'll see some revisions come daylight. We also have been told that the iPod touch January Update is mysteriously unavailable for purchase at the moment (thanks Will!) so perhaps that's in play as well. Of course, it could just be, you know, maintenance The question must be considered: are the Apple Store outages really technically necessary to update the store content, or are they a form of grass-roots marketing that primes the buying audience for something new? After all, Amazon, Dell and Newegg add products constantly and never seem to stall into these extended cones of silence.
