Za druhé svìtové války pracoval jako hlavní fyzik v "U.S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory" ve státì Washington D.C. Po válce (1945) se stal Bardeen zamìstnancem Bellových telefonních laboratoøí v Murray Hill, New Jersey. Zde Brattain a Shockley provádìli výzkum vlastností elektronové vodivosti polovodièù a 23. prosince roku 1947 odhalili svìtu první tranzistor, který odstartoval revoluci ve svìtì elektrotechniky a elektroniky. Tranzistor nahradil vìtší a neskladnìjší vakuované elektronky a dovolil miniaturizovat rùzné pøepínaèe, které pak umožnily zvýšit výkon poèítaèù. Na zaèátku padesátých let Bardeen dokonèil výzkum, na kterém zaèal pracovat již ve tøicátých letech a zaèal pracovat na teorii, která by vysvìtlila zmizení elektrického odporu nìkterých materiálù pøi teplotì blízké absolutní nule.
