Karl Hjalmar Branting Karl Hjalmar Branting (1860-1925), Swedish statesman and Nobel laureate, born in Stockholm. In 1889 he was one of the founders of the Social Democratic Party in Sweden, and he successfully fought for social reforms, including universal suffrage. As the leader of a growing party he rose to minister of finance in 1917-18. In 1920, 1921-23, and 1924-25 he was prime minister; from 1921 to 1923 he was also foreign minister. Nel 1889 partecip² alla fondazione del Partito socialdemocratico svedese e dal 1896 al 1902 fu lâunico deputato socialdemocratico nel Parlamento svedese. Nel 1907 assunse la presidenza del partito, che sotto la sua guida pass² dai 34 deputati eletti nel 1908 ai 110 del 1921. Convinto riformatore, Branting fu il principale protagonista della stagione politica che fece della Svezia un modello in tema di legislazione sociale. Ministro delle Finanze nel 1917, rappresent² la Svezia nelle conferenze di pace di Parigi del 1919 (
