He isolated and studied the sex hormones estrone (1929), androsterone (1931), and progesterone and testosterone (1934), determining their relationships to steroids . For this work he was awarded the 1939 Nobel Prize in chemistry with the Yugoslav-Swiss scientist Leopold Ruïiïka. The German government initially prevented Butenandt from accepting the prize, but he eventually received the medal and diploma after World War II (1939-1945). From 1936 to 1972 he was director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biochemistry (since 1945, the Max Planck Institute), and served as president (1960-72) of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science. Butenandt also studied insect hormones ( see Pheromone ) and viruses.
