In 1957, as chief doctor at the surgical clinic of D¼sseldorf Evangelical Hospital, he originated an important cardiological technique, called catheterization, that is used in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. He first demonstrated the technique in 1929 by experimenting upon himself; he made an incision in a vein in his right arm and manoeuvred a catheter up the vessel and into the right auricle of his heart by observing via a mirror the fluoroscope image of the instrument as it travelled through his body. For this experiment he was a co-winner of the 1956 Nobel Prize for

Dopo avere conseguito la laurea all’Universit  di Berlino, ebbe l’incarico di sovrintendente medico presso l’ospedale Diakonie di Bad Kreuznach. Raggiunse la notoriet  dopo avere introdotto una importante tecnica cardiologica, chiamata cateterizzazione, che coraggiosamente speriment² per la prima volta su se stesso. La tecnica consiste nell’introduzione, attraverso una vena del braccio, di una sottile cannula che viene quindi sospinta fino a raggiungere il cuore, nel quale pu² essere lasciata per alcune ore. Grazie a questa procedura, che si rivel² molto utile alla diagnosi e al trattamento delle malattie del cuore , nel 1956 gli fu conferito il premio Nobel per la fisiologia o la medicina.
