Hinshelwood's greatest achievements were in the field of chemical kinetics, which is the study of the conditions necessary for certain chemical reactions to occur. His particular interest was studying the complexities involved in the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen that produces water. He also contributed greatly to the understanding of chain reactions and chain branching (a type of chain reaction), particularly with regard to explosive chemical reactions. Hinshelwood's work led to the 1956 Nobel Prize in chemistry, which he shared with Soviet chemist Nikolay N. Semenov

Hinshelwood trug magebliche Arbeiten zur Erforschung von Kettenreaktionen bei und untersuchte u. a. Stoffwechsel reaktionen an Bakterien . Zusammen mit Nikolaij Nikolajewitsch Semjonow wurde ihm 1956 der Nobelpreis f¼r Chemie ¼berreicht. Hinshelwood starb am 9. Oktober 1967 in London.
