From 1939 to 1945 he worked on radar development for the Air Ministry. He returned to Cambridge, first as a lecturer, then as assistant research director, and in 1952 was made Research Professor of the Royal Society. Hodgkin shared the 1963 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with his colleague, the British physiologist Andrew F. Huxley, and the Australian physiologist Sir John C. Eccles. Hodgkin and Huxley were cited for their formulation of the mathematical equations expressing the electrical events accompanying the discharge of a single nerve cell. Hodgkin wurde am 5. Februar 1914 in Banbury (Oxfordshire) geboren. Nach Abschluss der Schule studierte Hodgkin an der Universit¤t Cambridge. Von 1939 bis 1945 arbeitete er f¼r das Luftfahrtministerium an der Entwicklung des Radars . Anschlieend kehrte er nach Cambridge zur¼ck, wo er zun¤chst als Lehrbeauftragter, sp¤ter als Assistant Research Director t¤tig war. Seit 1952 ist er Professor in Cambridge. Im Jahr 1963 erhielt er gemeinsam mit dem britischen Physiologen Andrew Fielding Huxley (seinem Kollegen) und dem australischen Physiologen John Carew Eccles den Nobelpreis f¼r Physiologie oder Medizin . Hodgkin und Huxley erhielten die Auszeichnung f¼r die Erforschung der elektrischen Vorg¤nge, die sich bei der Weiterleitung von Reizen in der Nervenzelle abspielen, und deren mathematische Beschreibung. 1972 wurde Hodgkin in den Adelsstand erhoben. Der Laureat starb im Alter von 85 Jahren am 20. Dezember 1998 in Cambridge.
